Fable III on PC can help Microsoft with the Games for Windows Live and Games for Windows Marketplace initiatives by getting it in more homes and increasing adoption. The cash made from sales will be going place so that isn't much of an issue, releasing them on the same day could be a win win situation for Microsoft in the long run.

Edit: Yes but a lot has changed since 2008, including Games for Windows. I'm just saying this is something that could help them on both...

Dang, can't believe I forgot to list ACES! That was Microsoft's oldest game development studio by decades. Made some fantastic games too that sold really well, can't figure out the closure myself either.

Yeah, lets get a bug ridden incomplete release instead!

Ninja Gaiden 2 came out in 2008 and was pushing how much you could have on screen at once with the blood effects, dismemberments, amount of stuff on screen, etc. The game had framerate issues of course but see my comment above. You do realize a game doesn't just have to look good to be pushing a system, right?

Valhalla has been working on Devil's Third since 2008/2009 as well. IIRC, Team Ninja doesn't talk about their engines much so I don't know where you g...

Itagaki left before the game was even released so it's not like he could have done much about it anyway.

Technical strength started this gen? No. It started day one with the original game consoles, PC's, arcade machines, you name it. The concept of pushing hardware to its limits has always been with us.

You're looking at it with a hindsight bias.

Ninja Gaiden/Black was a technical marvel on the Xbox. Dead or Alive 4 was breath taking and to a certain extent still holds up today graphically.

Ninja Gaiden 2 looked good but ran bad, but to be fair, there was all the internal stuff going on against Itagaki at the time and he was more focused with Dragon Sword so it's not exactly all his fault that the game turned out like it did.

Banjo-Kazooie could easily have been Rare's answer to Ratchet and Clank, although since Banjo came first I think it would be the other way around.

Nuts & Bolts was a great game though, it added new elements to the game and had plenty in it as a love letter to Rare fans.

Nintendo sold their half of Rare too, and why would Microsoft let a studio they own work on a direct competitors console? There is no logic there, Rare did do GBA/DS stuff with THQ but Microsoft isn't in the gaming handheld space.

When they bought Rare Microsoft did have a rich library of studios, FASA, Ensemble, Digital Anvil, etc were household names for PC gamers. FASA was/is still well known in the table top RPG crowd as well as various other industries.

Rare has potential to make great games but Microsoft really isn't giving them the support they need. Guerrilla is a great example, before Sony they really didn't make the best games. Killzone was ok but with Killzone 2 they got the suppor...

Dead Space is more like Run Like Hell than RE.

Kodu is nothing like LittleBigPlanet and anyone who says otherwise hasn't played either. Kodu is about getting people into game development by simplifying things like if statements, triggers, etc to the point where the end user can easily understand how they work and explore the trade further if they are interested.

I still have to try Lost Odyssey, I've heard all these great things about it. Only JRPG I've played on 360 is Blue Dragon which is pretty good, surprised it's not on the list.

Do the console versions use dedicated servers?

It hadn't even been six months since the game had released and it's not like it sold poorly on consoles either, they even released DLC. Decisions like this really make me lose hope in SEGA, heck, I still can't get past the save eating bugs in Condemned 2!

The fact that SEGA and Rebellion claim the game is in a good condition on consoles is disappointing since it sounds like it isn't even close...

Jagex knows how to make good MMO's that people play. They started Runescape with a two man development team and are now pulling millions each quarter solely on ads and 1 million subscriptions (out of 10 million players).

Why? The Tomb Raider games even after Uncharted were selling millions of units worldwide. Gameplay wise is debatable but sales wise the franchise was still selling.

It sucks that Eidos shut down Core Design in 06, they were burnt out on Tomb Raider after having put out yearly games since the franchise started. The fate of the en...

For the 360 version of The Orange Box they had EA on their side and were still able to do things like patch net code and a lot of the other annoyances players had with it. Microsoft doesn't stop people from patching/updating titles as long as they meet quality requirements (meaning they won't mess anything system related up). DLC is also another factor, they could have released it for free but even releasing some paid stuff would ease the community a bit.

Up until m...

That's the thing, they didn't say it.

They were asked what they thought about having a story change so much in development and the impact it has on development teams in general.

"We did worry about that. When you’ve worked on something for a very, very long time, there’s always the danger of getting bored with it. You become used to it, and where things once felt very exciting and original, you at some point start to doubt that and feel like...

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts which came out at the same time is a good game as well. Not fond of their Kinect direction, I just hope Microsoft lets them show something more "to their roots" at Gamescon.

Rare is a subsidiary, anything they do is dictated by the higher ups.

I was hoping more information would come out about the site's pitch but it doesn't seem likely. Would be interesting to see exactly what they had hoped to accomplish and if it was achievable given Rare's status as a subsidiary of a publicly traded company. Investors don't get too happy after a company they have invested in basically says they are washed up and I doubt employees want to pro...
