They're not insulting their customers. The PS5, like every console has certain things that make the thermals work. The materials used are carefully chosen. Sony can't guarantee third party materials.
What? Free upgrades was pushed by Microsoft. Sony has and wants to continue charging for them. Game pass gives you access to hundreds of games cheap. Sony was charging $10 or more for games you already own. Microsoft added BC through their work and money across all generations. Microsoft has kept games at $60 while Sony immediately moved to $70. GP guarantees you can play new AAA games. Microsoft just spent 7.5 billion for a developer and publisher.
