Optimizing on consoles will still be infinitely easier than doing it on PC even with a new version every three years. You'd be optimizing to two, Xboxes, two PlayStations and one NX. On PC you're optimizing to thousands of potential setups.
Cupid bluray is not a good thing to use as an comparison here. Bluray is what he is saying psvr will be. Bluray never surpassed DVD and probably never will. On top of that streaming has already surpassed bluray and probably DVD as well. Bluray was expected to beat DVD and eliminate it more quickly than DVD killed VHS.
Mars Xbox, like many company divisions, has had it's issues. Most companies use lines of credit to support their business. Xbox just happened to have a line within it's parent company. But times have changed and Xbox is very profitable. It has been for years and has more than made up for previous losses. Even companies like Apple go through bad times. Microsoft bailed them out in the past.

Mars you can say the same for most companies ability to remain in business. PlayStation wouldn't have survived the PS3. Many businesses use lines of credit, most really, in order to pay their bills. That is the nature of business. Even Apple has almost gone out of business. Apple wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Microsoft. When they were going under it was Bill Gates that bailed them out.
As the soc becomes more powerful the need for traditional consoles does become less. There will be a point where good enough graphics will meet phone sized packaging and the majority will find that acceptable. Holding onto the idea of having a console is silly when the advantage of having a device that goes in your pocket and with you everywhere you go is a far better solution. All your games, movies and music with you.

If you go to Microsoft's Chanel9 the day after a talk a full video is available for streaming or download as well as audio files. You can also look up previous GDC and BUILD talks. But the UWP is something they've talked about at the last few developers conferences. Those videos are already available.

Moving to 14nm allows them big power savings and a smaller chip. Moving to a smaller design saves money. With the numbers they are selling it makes sense to shrink the console. Not shrinking it leaves way too much money on the table. Both Sony and Microsoft will introduce slim models the move from 28nm to 14nm is too big not to not take advantage of it.
Since this will now be sold at a profit I wonder if they will do a smaller PS4 and a price drop this E3. They will have plenty of room to do so now. Especially if this sells well. Or maybe some bundles with everything for $750, $700. They have options.

Another angle this could benefit Microsoft is with Azure. Azure is becoming cheaper and cheaper. With many game developers going with dedicated servers adding PSN and Live together makes a developer more likely to just throw that business Microsoft's way. They wouldn't want to have two separate sets of servers so Azure would probably be easier for the developer.
Phoenix Xbox Live and PSN can go free because of the rise in digital sales. As they increase the extra money made from them more than offsets the cost of running the servers. A digital copy requires no transport, package, disc or format license. Those cost more than cover server cost if they receive a small portion of that savings.

This doesn't help Microsoft catch PlayStation. It will probably make it harder if things stay as they are with games available. If people who owned a 360 that haven't upgraded yet were leaning towards Xbox One because that's where their friends play, that now becomes a nonissue. They can buy that PS4 and still play with their Xbox friends.
