You are not looking at upgrades on modern technology teh right way. You're not applying advancements in fabrication to consoles. There's a reason you can buy a $150 new laptop now when you couldn't buy a $1000 laptop fifteen years ago. You are right that he has said these won't be modular. But here's what people are assuming that is wrong.

The idea of a $500 console every year. Look online at Amazon and New Egg, you'll fin...

No matter what some will still hate. People that understand the benefits of this aren't against it. The idea of being held back would no longer exists. The top tier and PC could get more of what they want while the lowest tier still gets the games.

People also need to set aside price fears. Technology has gone down in price drastically since the 90s. The things that make that possible have only increased. This generation of consoles weren't sold at a huge loss at l...

You commented not only without reading the article (I get that with the amount of junk), but also without knowing much of anything about what Microsoft even talked about. They have made it clear that games will scale and work across all versions of the console going forward. That means backwards and forwards compatibility. So even if you have three versions of the console, the same game works. No more separating like Xbox One games and 360 games. Just Xbox games. ...

So far this is only with one Microsoft title. How is this different from what iTunes does. And that's with other peoples music. Microsoft actually makes this game.

Here's the reality. It sounds like Microsoft is taking on the responsibility of a publisher. They provide storage and distribution for 30%. Not sure what percentage publishers get now but I'm sure developers can make up their own minds on value.

Another thing being left out is I r...

People who love games should love the idea of faster hardware updates and games being made for more than one platform.

The idea of wanting a game to be exclusive is is a terrible stance from the start. You should want games to be successful. Exclusivity doesn't make games successful. Availability on multiple platforms can make a game successful.

If you honestly, honestly being the key word, look at what happens when you have a game available on multi...

I think it makes a difference. When you enter a race three years late you need something to differentiate yourself. A carbon copy with Mario and Zelda isn't enough. I don't think the person that cares about Nintendo IP cafes about the power. At the same time, I don't think the person that doesn't care about Nintendo IP has waited three years to buy a console.

You bring out a machine with three times the power and at $300 and you become the platform of choic...

If Nintendo is releasing another unpowered machine this is a mistake. If they push well past One and PS4 this is a great move for them and the developer.

Ashlen why is it you believe the cost of consoles will remain $400-500? The GPU and CPU are the two most expensive parts in a console. In the past they were separate parts costing $100-250 each. Consoles launched selling at a loss. In 2009 Microsoft launched the Xbox S that combined those two parts.

This generation those two parts cost $100 in the PS4 and $110 in the Xbox. One APU containing the CPU and GPU and the consoles launched at or below the cost to manufacture them....

Why would you pay $300-400 for the upgrade? You would be upgrading a portion of the current generation of consoles that cost $100 in the PS4 and $110 in the Xbox One. A module every two or three years could cost $150 or less and offer an increase of 300% or more.

You really wouldn't want that? The cost of the APUs in current generation consoles represents 25% of the cost and that will continue to decrease with each die shrink while power increases. And you'd get arc...

It seems some still believe Xbox loses money. Can one of you or all of you please give a quick breakdown of why you think that is. I am very curious to hear the logic involved.

Just as I thought. Disagrees but nothing to back it up. It's okay to not comment on a article or subject if you don't know it. But just believing in things "cause" is just sad. You can't believe Microsoft stopped making the original Xbox because they were losing money but cont...

For Microsoft if you want more games that aren't on PlayStation how do you get them. Install base helps. Making all Xbox games available on PC instantly increases the install base by tens of millions of units. A developer makes a Universal App on Xbox and PC and stands a greater chance of making a profit since it cost very little more than an exclusive on either platform.

Sony said six of ten exclusives lose money. With a Universal App the chances of not at least break...

Games coming out on Windows and Xbox is in the developers best interest. This helps developers survive. If they can make a game for two platforms for slightly more than for one it helps them.

Sony said only four in ten exclusives makes a profit and those four cover the cost of all of them. Wouldn't it be smarter for a developer to cover two platforms at around the same price and maybe break even on the other six titles meaning the four that sold well make you a profit i...

Still not the same. PC is different because you can buy any combination of parts and throw them together. That makes it hard for developers to optimize. Manufacturers produce ten to fifteen new GPUs a year.

This is one more powerful module every other year or even every three. If you launch a modular console in 2019, in fifteen years you would still only have five specs to target. PC in that time would have the varying combinations of one hundred and fifty graphics cards a...

I think it's going to be a long time before we see new RAM. If the console is built with HBM2 it should be safe for a while. It wouldn't have be a permanent solution, just a ten to twelve years solution. But the RAM could be on the module also.

You would basically be buying a box with all of the input/outputs and cooling fans. They could actually allow you to buy new modules and trade in the old for credit towards the new one. Some people seem to believe bring ten o...

Flex Windows 10 already works with any GPU whether it's discreet or embedded. They are still working the kinks out but it works pretty well.

If they release a new unit with 32gb of RAM and a modular design where you get a new APU every two or three years their wouldn't be as many different parts for devs to target. As long as it sticks with x86 they should be fine. Another option could be to open source the optimization and allow people to download the settings like that would a simpler car setting in Forza. Console is closed, but you would have tons of people on PC tinkering with the settings like they do with modding. People...

Offering multiple versions of your machine at this point in computing makes sense. Easily upgraded modules would be even better but small steps. I've been saying this will be a short generation pretty much from the beginning. Eight year lifecycles can't survive the increases in power occurring on a regular basis. Or the comparison to PC now that PC uses low level APIs also. The difference will only get worse as PC moves from four teraflops on a GPU to twenty or thirty if the rate of i...

Ninsigma that was the plan all along. They just need to ease people in because of stupid people on the internet that turn it into "Xbox doesn't have any exclusives". PC and consoles are two very different demographics. There is crossover, but millions are one or the other. You don't build an OS that works on both to keep developers separate. The point of the OS is to increase the developers potential customers with less work. Xbox will benefit also. PC has far more exclusiv...

I bet 3d is way better than home. The problem is 3d would also be way more dangerous. It would be a matter of time before a AR horror game causes a death or serious injury.

I think a combination would be best.

Supposedly the FoV problem is the cost of the glass. That will come down drastically with increased users just like every other product. Industry will drive initial demand. Once cell companies and cable companies become involved with the apps developers make you'll see a consumer version with greater FoV and subsidizing.
