I don't believe that's true. I would bet you that most developers will tell you that they could do more now with the PS1 than they could when the PS1 was the top console. Methods improve just like technology. While there is more that can be done with the PS3 and the 360, far more can be done with the next generation of consoles still to come. New methods will extend the life of the PS3 and 360 and they will be great for your kids or niece or nephew, But I'm ready for not just bett...
We will hit the wall as far as realism most likely in a generation or two. Making everything work as smoothly as possible with all of the bells and whistles on will be the main job soon after. That and new ways to interface. But the thing about realism is that it's a double edge sword. As things look more real, we will start to see games banned for that very thing. Most governments will pull the plug on games with realistic brain and skull fragments hitting the player in the face. They di...
'I loved my '70 mustang fastback with the 351 cleavland, top loader tranny and 9" rear end but'
I was with you until you brought up your choice in dating, what you like doing with him/it and what you're packin'. Stick to gaming buddy.
Sorry.
Of course it doesn't make sense to you. Technology moving on was exactly my point. PS3 fans seem to believe that the PS3 being the most powerful console was going to be the case forever. Strictly because Sony said so. The PS3 was the most powerful gaming machine for all of a few months. And then PC hardware advanced and overtook the consoles again. And that has been the case since late 2006. The only advantage consoles have is that they are made of parts designed o work together. Machine ...
@Fr0sty,
We've been hearing about those 100gb disc for 5 years now. HD-DVD was the better choice because it was cheap for everyone. Sony jacked up the price for control. It was never about specs for advancement, it was about specs so that they could charge consumers more money.
Uncompressed sound was needed for the smallest of consumers that actually have the equipment and ears to hear the difference. Many still can't tell the difference between a 720...
Uncharted better add some destruction and open world gameplay.
I say if PS3 fans want BF3 to look like the PC version Dice should try to it.
But they should also charge them for it($70/80 should cover it) and let them wait the years it would take to do it.
Killzone 2 took more than 5 years. Enjoy your wait.
After the financial meltdown, many analyst claimed that executives lied to them during interviews. This is another one of those situations. Just think for a minute all of the times we've been told something wasn't in development. Only to get an announcement later on. All of the current consoles are badly outdated. They may have more power to give. But they will never hit the ability of technology readily available now. Let alone the technology available when the Wii U releases next ye...
Ken Kutaragi really did a number on Sony fanboys. Many of them never thought nothing would ever eclipse the PS3 or if it did it would be 10 years or more later. Welcome back to reality guys. Many might commit suicide when the Wii U crushes all current consoles.
Just being realistic. Technology doesn't live in the past.
Well said. The development money is mostly spent on the consoles. Gamers too often seem to forget that gaming is a business for the developers. If nothing else, with graphics nearing their ceiling, new consoles would cut the development time on titles spent trying to hit a certain graphic level. No more 5 year development periods trying to make a game look like the CGI trailer.
Just because we're reaching the point where graphics can't go any further doesn't mean there aren't other ways to improve games. Physics, graphics and interfaces can all be improved with more power. I'm all for a new console right now. It's time to move on.
They bought that plant back from Toshiba. But it is believed it will be used for something other than Cell processors. CMOSs for HD cameras. But adding cores to the Cell is the way to go for Sony. But it's also the way to go for MS. And MS didn't have a tsunami to deal with and almost 4 billion in losses to go with it. If they had started to transform that plant into a CMOS plant and now need to go back to Cell it will cost them. If there was damage from the tsunami on the plant. It w...
That controller opens a lot of possibilities for Nintendo. It makes RTSs viable, it works for strategy FPSs and it would be great for inventories in all types of games. RPGs. Shooters.
Instead of going from pushing a button and making a selection from a wheel on Mass Effect. You just hit the icon for the power you want to use. Or select the weapon you want to go to.
@ L6D7BLU3
They are just short sighted.
Pushing Kinect has nothing to do with Microsoft not being concerned with the hardcore market. It's a Tortoise and Hare situation. MS looks at the sales of every major 3rd party release and see that they sell best on the 360. They look at the HC exclusives and see Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable outselling almost all of Sony's exclusives. And they think, "Let's add new customers". Release early again and we can start the whole thing over.
The difference in t...
I don't believe Sony means they won't release another console before 2016. They will release the PS4 in the next few years. Even if they wait until 2014 they will be in the same position they are in now. Microsoft will release in 2012 with Nintendo. It's their belief based on their research that the one to market first usually wins. That was the thinking on the 360 and it has worked for them. Why change now. And even though the Wii U would release at the same time, it's believ...
And I am so tired of the lack of exclusives nonsense. 360 has just as many exclusives as Sony. They may not be 1st party, but they get far more 3rd party support. And for all of this "I want exclusives" talk, no one really buys the games. Does anyone really think Sony made much profit if any on Killzone 2. It took 5 years of development. I would bet they lost money on that. Forza gets panned buy the same "exclusives" people and yet it continues to outsell the vast majority...
I believe MS will announce and launch a new system next year(remember they don't want to do the look and wait thing anymore). And Halo 4 will be on both systems. But it will be the same disc. Many may have forgotten that a year or two ago it was rumored that MS was working on a technology that would allow them to upgrade a game according to the specs of the machine being used. It may even have something to do with the new disc upgrade they did recently. They could launch a new console, th...
Diversifying into cable and telephone isn't a short-term move. It's adding value and attracting new markets. Gamers should applaud this. If a cheap monthly live subscription brings you video calling, multi-player, cable, DVR and even more discounts on games I don't understand the complaints. Gaming is a 60 billion dollar business. Becoming the leading supplier of another 60 billion dollar business is good for gaming. It means more tech and better consoles.
I think most people are being very short-sighted.
To me the biggest potential win for MS is live TV. Cable is a huge business. If they can snatch just a portion of that away from the cable subscribers, they will win big. Live has more subscribers than any of the major cable providers. Comcast has around 23 million. Live about 30. If they get the content holders on board, MS could become the largest cable provider in the US. Add Skype and you have video conferencing, video voi...
All this nonsense about MS having no HC games is just stupid. MS changed their strategy a few years ago when they dropped most of the in-house devs. It's something Sony should have understood and followed. For all of the talk of exclusives, MS concentrates on the ones that sell consistently. Sony pours millions into games that sell less than 2 million copies. The reality is that this is the VG business. Making games is not a game. MS and Nintendo make profits while Sony fanboys go on and ...
It would be a huge mistake for Microsoft and Sony to wait past 2013. It's crazy for them to think about waiting past 2012. Nintendo will be there 2012. And Nintendo(and developers) are playing games when they say the new Wii is about on even footing with the current consoles. If rumors are to be believed, and they were right about the controller, Nintendo is using a Power7 CPU and a modified R700 GPU. Both are far more powerful than the parts in the PS# and 360. And the Power7 is already ...
