Doc, if a new console was released as often as new PC parts PCs would always be behind consoles. PCs have to work on many different options. Consoles have a specific set of parts so you can optimize the software to work as best it can.

Consoles like the 360 and PS3 were better than the average Gaming PC at launch. You had to spend thousands on PC parts to get a new consoles performance. You pay several times the cost of a console to get comparable performance on a PC. If anyo...

Gamers that believe phones can't overtake portables as the mobile platform of choice aren't looking at it right. Too many gamers seem to thing developers work for fun. It's about making money. The best chance to make money is with the largest install base. Phone have a far larger install base. If a phone ever comes out with a reasonable controller scheme, it could be over for handhelds. Plus there are billions that don't want a gaming handheld, but they need a phone. So they a...

The Cell isn't capable of handling the job. The RSX is a more costly chip. Two Cells would have saved Sony almost 40 badly needed bucks.

The chip just wasn't what they thought it was.

Rare is a good example of why you don't buy. It's not about ruining a company. It's about a company running out ideas. Plenty of independent developers have gone out of business. If you own that developer, you own that failure, the reason they fail and the cost of failure.

Ck is right about the Cell. It isn't even what Sony thought it would be. Sony originally thought the Cell would act as the CPU and the GPU. It wasn't powerful enough. And it's power only shows on exclusives made in-house. Because no other developer is going to spend the time and money to get the extra 20% the PS3 has in it. Sony made poor decisions with the Cell and with Blu-ray.

Guy RAM isn't the only problem with the PS3. The Cell has bottlenecks within it....

No one uses a phone to replace a portable now, but the power of phones is as good as the portables have now. And a new phone comes out every few months. Each with newer and more powerful chips. The Vita and 3DS will be at the bottom of the pack in two years and already in need of a refreash.

Two companies work on handheld gaming machines, Nintendo and Sony. There are probably more than a dozen companies making phones. And half a dozen companies making SoCs for phones with a c...

Pachter's a little right and a little wrong on this one. Nintendo should have done the Wii U last year at the latest. It would have given them a two year head start and that would have allowed for enough of an install base to guarantee support from third party developers once the others launched.

He is also right about the 3DS to a certain extent. It is competing with phones. And phones are different from portables because there are several companies competing. That mean...

No one will be stupid enough to release a under powered feature oriented machine. Even the Wii U will be more than most are thinking. Just trying to make money is a losing proposition for anyone. The console holder that tries that route will fail and be third in the next generation. Technology has advanced to much for a modest power advance and added functionality. If they can get console level graphics out of a $300 portable. It would be silly to release a console at the end of 2012 that wil...

I don't have an issue with the tablet thing. It is something that was needed a long time ago. A touch screen for menus in RPGs, rear view mirrors in driving, marking positions or objectives in multiplayer gaming. There are a lot of needs for a tablet. Even UDraw would work if they reapplied it and marketed it correctly. Nintendo has failed to use things they've made in the past so time will tell on their tablet controller. But what has been rumored so far sounds like they are headed i...

All of the companies have been leaders and followers. They need to continue to do that. I'm not into copying what others do. That's a surefire way to not succeed. Microsoft has gone their own way in a lot of areas in console gaming and they need to continue to do that. APUs are the future and MS is a leader there. Motion and gesturing in addition to a controller is the future. Unified shaders were the future. There is no need for MS to start waiting to copy others.

Mass Effect outsells most games. Just because it doesn't outsell them all doesn't mean it's not a major game.

Abash you forgot to mention the part where the 360 outsold the PS3 last year world wide. Also not sure how Vita has helped since the early launch editions are still available. Don't things like that usually end up on e-bay for much more money.

Jobesy, everyone knows that America means the US.

Shredder, Halo is owned by MS. Yeah I know, it's about the exclusives. Funny no one buys them.

But what MS does means a lot to Sony. If they wai...

Probably some kid playing games when he wasn't supposed to be and hid the 360 when his parents were coming to his room. Not sure how Microsoft gets blamed for that. But it seems that anything can happen in the mind of a fanboy.

MS is concentrating on getting all of their systems working together. Phones, tablets and PCs all have the power, or near it with the phones, to run 360 level game. If all of those different platforms are running Windows 8 or some form of it, why build a totally new system? Open Arcade and 360 games to the other systems for an instant catalog. A catalog far better than what the other portables offer and concentrate on bringing new experiences to them. I know I'd rather play Skyrim on my p...

They better be using more than one Cell if they plan to compete with modern CPUs. That or plan to add a lot more than 6 SPUs.

They aren't playing kids games. Madden, Call of Duty or most shooters aren't kids games. There are people that were playing a PS2 ten years ago when they were 10. Are you saying the PS3 is off limits to them. What console should they be playing. The Wii U will have the power to render Call of Duty at a higher level than the PS3 and 360. It already has AAA hardcore support. Previous Wii consoles were underpowered compared to what others were doing. This time, at least for one year, the...

There is already a lot of hardcore support for the Wii U. Darksider, Ghost Recon Assassin's Creed. Add the EA sports. Funny that many of the hardcore games that people play also appeared on the Wii but people seem to ignore that. Call of Duty has a Wii version. So did Far Cry. If they developed down to the Wii, they will surely develop up to the Wii U. Especially since it will be more of what they really want than the 360 and the PS3.

The graphical advantage will be large for the Wii U so developers will develop for it. It is also basically a beefed up 360 CPU and GPU so it will be easy for them to develop for. It is everything developers have wanted. More power, easy programming and a disc with more space. Plus that added power will be used for things that can't be done on the PS3 and 360 like more physics and better AI.

Not sure how you're coming up with your estimates but they are different from what computer experts say. The 360 has the most powerful graphics chip this generation. The Cell's ability to help the GPU in the PS3 is what gives it the advantage.

The GPU rumored to be in the Wii U is 4xxx series ATI. The 360 GPU was based on an 1xxx series ATI. There were huge increases in ability between the 1xxx series and the 4xxx. Not sure how the current generation would still be c...
