I have to agree with the article when it mentions the potential threat from Microsoft. If the rumors are true of a ARM based $99 console, it could be ARM cores fused to an AMD discrete-level GPU. That would be a big difference in power and would still be as cheap to make.
And while MS has a history of being a closed environment, that may be the point of this console. An open source alternative that pushes brand recognition to a new audience. MS has become a lot more involved...
Technology has moved far enough along to allow for a console that sells for $300 that does 1080p and 4xAA. Using APUs is almost half the cost of using a separate GPU and CPU. And the current die sizes will allow for cheaper chips than the current generation. There is no need for a $400 machine this next generation. Even the MS leak with a machine containing two APUs and a BC chip was target priced at $300 with a $75 mark-up. Checkout that leak from a month ago.

I think there will be multiple versions. I believe all of them will have a HD. But I think there will be a cheap one that will be sold as a set-top box to cable companies. It wouldn't take much to beat out Motorola. The DVR features that were rumored for the 360 will be in the 720. That would cut $13 from the cable bill.
I don't have a disorder that compels me to click on that single ad in the right corner. I ignore it 99% of the time. And while MS success doesn't necessarily equate to better games for me, it does equate to me being sure the maker of my console will be around in the next ten years. Sony's missteps over the last six or seven years have done the opposite. I'm sure that is sinking in at Sony.

16GB might be flsh for people who already bought a large HD for their current PS3 or may plan to buy a HD later.

And then the new releases panel. If you check weekly or daily, you will have no problem finding the new games. Same for every other category. I agree with Guy. There is a lot of extra value on this edition. That said, Omarzy is correct also. The cost to make the 360 is a third pf the launch cost. The Premium cost MS less than $200 to make. So even with all of the extras this should have been a $300 package. Even at that price it would still make a nice profit for MS.
I agree. I remember twenty years ago you could go to Dave and Busters and play on a VR machine. That tech has to be smaller and the computer power is probably already built into smart phones by now. There is no reason that we can't have VR in the home within the next few years.

Actually if you look at the whole document it kinda sounds like they may allow OEMs to make their own versions. It kinda sounds like they want to install Xbox directly into other devices. Not just streaming to other devices.
The leaked document were of a machine estimated to have 6 times the power of the 360. If that is not for hardcore gaming, what is it for.The 360 can do all of the other things it showed. They would only need to add USB 2 or 3 for Kinect 2 and there would be no need for any other upgrades.
