I think both companies will announce very soon. It is well passed time for new consoles. And like Darcy said, there is no room for changing hardware much. The best they could do was add RAM or something if they want to launch this year. And they need to launch this year. Sony hurt themselves last generation by pushing Blu-ray on gamers. The cost of Blu-ray won't be a problem this time. That mistake allowed Microsoft to gain a strong footing in the industry. So now they just have to launch...

You can't base much on rumors. There are a lot of things that will determine who has the better games and the best console. It looks like both are letting AMD handle the CPU and GPU, but what will those parts include. It's not just a matter of what those parts are.

The next Xbox is rumored to have an older GPU. But it is a GPU said to be well suited for HSA. MS has been working on HSA for sometime with their own engineers and AMD works closely with them. So if Sony us...

Logic, I do agree that MS doesn't have to go with Blu-ray. They do have to have a larger disc though. DVD won't cut it this generation. But there is no reason it has to be Blu-ray. It could be something new. It could be HD DVD. It was always far cheaper to make than Blu-ray. And they could acquire it cheaply. Considering some games sell millions of copies and they could do contracts with a few companies for pressing games, it could be more cost effective than the royalties on Blu-ray ...

Companies like that people think the equipment the equipment is more than it is. look at Kinect. Everyone thought it would be very expensive to make. It wasn't. $47 to $60 at launch. I'm sure it cheaper now.

APUs have the CPU and GPU on the same die. That cuts cost almost in half day one on the two main parts. Last generation, the die size was 90nm on each chip. Now they are most likely using 28nm parts. Smaller nm means more chips per silicon wafer. And that's wh...

I'm not sure what Nintendo was thinking. Powerful machines are what makes gaming. They were silly to think they could do what the Wii did again. Not much new to the Wii U. It would have been better if it had been a Wii with cutting edge power.

If rumors are true about the use of APU's and sticking with more established architectures then they are headed in the right direction. Games are the most stable thing Sony has going and they need to hold their position there. That will give them the money to gain a footing in the other areas they want.

I don't see Kaz going with that "generation starts when we say so, steak dinner nonsense of the past. That mentality is what has Sony on the verge of collapse.

Design matters as much as anything. If both have full HSA who knows. But MS and AMD work together on that and there is likely an advantage for MS there. I doubt if they will allow AMD to just hand Sony things that they developed. Though it seemed to have happened with this generation. And having additional processors doesn't neccesarily make programming harder with HSA. It just adds another resource. The OS sees it all as one part. And the tools will make a difference there too. MS releas...

I think the doom articles are being written because Sony expected to sell 12-14 million Vitas in the first year. The first year is almost up and they have a little ways to go to hit those numbers. So some believe it is doomed because it won't come close to those numbers and a big chunk of Sony's projected profit for the year might have been based on that 12-14 million sells number.

And people should stop demanding more advertising. TV ads are really expensive and Sony...

I think being an FBI agent has a lot of potential. If they add a reputation system, it would make sense. Nothing wrong with a '40's style pre-miranda law officer that beats the hell out of people. Or shoots first and asks questions later. Maybe a little dirty. Or a lot. Depending on how you choose to play it.

Kill too many and they start to investigate why you are always around when the carnage happens.
Frame people for your crimes.

I always thought US law required them to honor a listed price.

I think it might go from state to state. But overall I think they have to honor that price.

Morrigan, the sales don't matter argument is amazing to me considering Sony is on the verge of bankruptcy. Most of those exclusives haven't sold and what proves that that matters is the fact that it is even a discussion. If they sold, that would have sold more consoles and there might not even be anything to debate about. Sony has other problems, but the days of knowing they could count on support from gaming might be over.

@Darkride

Until recently Sony had gaming in a separate division. So any losses were for gaming and it was obvious. MS has never had gaming as a separate division. There are many things in the division that don't make money. Their most innovative products R & D come from the division. Kinect, Surface(original). Many things that lose money like Zune and Internet TV. Hundreds of millions for advertising software that makes millions, but that income doesn't go to that...

I don't think they had a choice in removing the CPU. The USB 1 in the 360 isn't enough for all of the information from the cameras so to transmit CPU info too would have been impossible.

Dropping the price helps sell Vitas, but it kills Sony's bottom line. And that bottom line is more important right now. They are doing the right thing by making the titles cheaper. They need to go that extra step and start bundling titles with it. And the PS3. MS broke even on cost in 2006 on the 360. That $299 price has been padding their pockets for some time and they get away with it by bundling games with the console. That and having the PS3 stuck at such a high price.

Sony is on the verge of going out of business and people still demand a service that cost the company hundreds of millions a year to run for free. Cause and effect, folks.

But Sony did that to themselves.

I know, I know. You just want good games. And you only care about the games.

I want it to do as many things as possible. Having two separate CPU/GPU units makes it so that they don't interfere with each other. People need to get used to machines having many purposes. It the way it's going to be from now on.

Sorry but that list sucks to me. For the most part a lot of things named are a given.

10. Don't call it the 720.
9.MS has never forgotten about the hardcore. That is a Sony fanboy lie. CoD, BF and most of the hardcore games that people actually buy are on the 360. And sales matter because it is a vote with your wallet.
8. No mass failures. Like that was on purpose. And before some idiot says they might rush it remember they started working on it back in &#...

Kaz is making smart moves. He was just left with a huge problem. If given a chance I think he can dig them out of their hole. I'm not sure he will have that time though. If they had listened to Stringer 5 years ago they would not be in this position.

@raytraceme

Vita makes money because it is sold at a profit per unit. The problem for Sony with the Vita is they aren't selling nearly as many as they had hoped. And that is eating into their projected profit. Which is eating into their credit rating and stock price. And that will eat into their profits further.

So they need much bigger Vita sales because the Vita was being counted on for a huge chunk of their profit projections.
