I don't think that it is so much poor taste in games as much as it is an almost xenophobia. No matter how good a foreign title is it never really gets any recognition in Japan. GTA has been the only one to really have any success in Japan. Still when looking at it compared to the Pokemons, Marios, Monster Hunters, etc... it hasn't sold much at all.

DSi and PSP, holy CRAP! The PSP is enjoying a HUGE resurgence in popularity lately in Japan AND Europe. The XBox 360 even with The Last Remnant still couldn't surpass PS3 sales which is another shocker. I was sure that with the coming of a new JRPG that it would have flown off the shelves. Definately interesting times. Now we'll just have to wait and see how the Japanese audience receives Star Ocean 4 and WKC.

Not to mention they don't have the first party studios to make up for any of the loss leading with software sales. Here's the problem as I see it. Microsoft EOL'd and dropped support for the XBox after just 3.5 years. Assuming that the XBox 360 will EOL in late 2010 and they introduce a new console it will not in any way inspire confidence in the consumer. Nice post. I would like to add one more thing though, a prediction. The XBox 360 will go EOL (End Of Life) in late 2010. The remaining stock and production orders will be filled and new units will sell out by Q3/Q4 2011. As for the next XBox? IF Microsoft cannot crack the 50 million unit barrier this generation with hardware sales I wouldn't count on a XBox 720.
Most efficient? NO. Standard, unfortunatey yes. The reason the x86 is the standard is simply to maintain backward compat. with legacy applications. There is no reason this cannot be done with a new more efficient and powerful architecture and running the legacy apps in a VM or a wrapper. On one of my workstations which is a Dual Proccesor PPC 970MP w/ 4 gig I run QEMU with Windows XP Pro and have all the functionality I need for any of the legacy apps I use.

I can see how DSi and PSP sales cut into a little bit but overall I don't think it should have impacted it that hard. Look at when MGS4 came out for the PS3 or the other RPGs for the 360. Their sales were better than they are now with The Last Remnant and the DS (no DSi then) and PSP were still selling well along with the Wii. It really doesn't make sense seeing that a new JRPG usually does really well in sales and moving hardware no matter what the platform is.
