Zune and to a lesser extent the PSP Go.
It comes down to consumers buying into a product and not how much a company pours into it.
Its next gen for Nintendo for sure. I don't understand why someone needs to get their nickers in a twist just because they think next gen means significantly more horsepower.
To be honest, if next gen meant more advanced AI then I've seen very little evidence of it this gen over previous gen games.
So you're telling me that the success of the Vita is all according to Sony's master sales plan? I guess that's why they dropped their sales targets for this year.
Good strategy...aim high, under perform and try convince everyone its a-ok.
As for your personal attack, you can pass such judgement when the Vita becomes a success.
But I would not buy a Vita to play these types of games, I would just stick with my phone or tablet.
Ok, so if you're a casual gamer why would you consider buying a Vita if they're making these games available on certified phones and tablets? I thought it would make more sense making more games that are exclusive to the Vita.
@juju:
So you're telling me causual gamers will buy into the vita because its as versatile as a smartphone or tablet? Gee, guess that's why the Vita is selling so well.
Looking at your previous comments you are such a fanboy!
Who cares if a game comes on multiple discs. Its not life ending.
So....casual games to the rescue?
First off if you don't believe the Vita is struggling then your kidding yourself. Not only is hardware barely moving but look at global software sales and its pretty quiet on the Vita front as well.
Without changes this time next year the Vita will be dead in the water. Something needs to be done to stir up consumer awareness and desire to get them to buy into the Vita. Games alone may not be enough but a combination of games, marketing and a more attractive pricing ...
Both MS and Nintendo (especially) have done really well this gen. Although Sony has done well it has definitely lost ground so it will be interesting to see how they approach a PS4. As for the Vita, that chart makes for abysmal reading with only 1 title in the top 100. Even if Sony is moving hardware developers look to be struggling at making any money from it.
Kinect is what Sony's cam for the PS3 should have always been. Kinect brings back fantastic family orientated entertainment just like Eyetoy brought to the market last gen.
Its where the money is so developers would be stupid to ignore it. Games on touchscreen devices are still in their infancy but give it a few years and lets see where things are. Mind you, its not all angry birds as the ignorant would have you believe. There are some really challenging games available on touchscreen devices.
What amazes me is how very little the cost of the controller has changed throughout the lifecycle of the PS3. Its obviously had several internal changes over the years and is being made a lot cheaper nowadays so why are we still be charged 2007 prices for an extra one?
"Embarrassing"? Really?
How much more revenue will MS earn from a now 5 year old game by allowing it for sale on another platform? Remember, software is where the REAL money is, not hardware.
I really hope MS and Sony come up with a single console next gen as having to buy multple devices is a pain for consumers and developing for multiple devices is more expensive fo developers.
@Ruby:
Really? Shame on people for not buying a Vita? Why a shame?
How about shame on Sony for the high price?
How about shame on Sony for not bundling a memory card sooner (not that a 4gb card is acceptable anyway)
Do you really think Sony will care about those who purchased a Vita if they drop the platform next year?
With a device like this on the market there is now no reason for me to get a Vita. Sure the Vita has some great exclusives but I also have a thirst for apps and better media support. If it sells then I can easily see bigger development houses throwing their support at it.
Biggest concern is will it sell enough units fast enough. Samsung and Apple basically have the tablet market cornered and they could introduce a similar device for their respective platforms.
Remember all the negative press Nintendo received before the launch of the Wii and 3DS? Nintendo came through it so why is Sony still struggling?
Layoffs can decimate the morale of a companies workforce and can be very disruptive. Typically those that keep there positions are asked/expected to take on more responsibility for no additional remuneration.
@merril
Your comment echos of "people will never buy on line in favor of going to the store" or "people will always prefer to own the physical CD".
By the time the PS4 or Xbox 720 reach its 10 year anniversary cloud gaming will already be a mature marketplace.
Not true. It may simply be that enough consumers don't buy into it as there needs are wider reaching.
At present the Vita does not have mass consumer appeal, nor is it ever likely to.
