This means that the DS was a fluke as well then. Sony has never managed to sell as many consoles in one generation as the PS2 but it wasn't a fluke. Nintendo went in one direction with the Wii and realized that consumers that bought the system were perpetually happy with Wii Sports and Wii Fit. They didn't really want new software and so Nintendo's own core titles weren't selling to that big install base.
I couldn't disagree more, because that generation of Nintendo trying something different started with the DS. The DS influenced Nintendo to go in a different route than the other 2 companies. It was a brilliant thought out console from concept to finished product and down to the pricing. The WiiU just wasn't well presented at all and it has great games but I'm still waiting for asymmetrical game play to fully take advantage of the Gamepad

There aren't even any official rumors out there yet, why do people keep assuming this will be the case. WiiU was different, because dev kits went out and that's when news started flooding in.

Why do people keep hoping for this? What would be different about a Mario Galaxy game on PS4 vs the PS5? Sony and Microsoft have no desires to push the way we game other than graphics. The GC is still probably the best console that Nintendo has made! In the face of the competition it had some of the best looking and running games. The sad thing is it's not just on the Nintendo side of things, if you go into any negative Sony article which is very few on N4G or into a Microsoft article. Actually manufacturers are still having problems getting high powered chips out on 14nm yields. Yes many cell phones are produced on 14nm, but gpu's draw a lot of power and they still can't produce enough for high volume orders.
