This is Sony / Blu-ray’s main strategy. They know HD DVD players are selling better and they are going to get even cheaper this holiday. The new October Blu-ray profile requires a new chip for decoding PIP, meaning it will be harder for Blu-ray to reduce manufacturing costs. Blu-ray can’t get in a price war, so their goal is to try and convince the public that HD DVD is a dead format because they cannot compete on a pricing level.
Just think about it: HD DVD does pretty much th...
And Toshiba HD DVD players are listed higher than standalone Blu-ray players.
A $20 price cut is good, but the real deal is the 5 free movies by mail + King Kong in the box. You can get these 6 movies on Amazon for about $20 each, so in terms of value, you're only paying $60 for the HD DVD drive.
I know the Xbox drive cannot do TrueHD audio, but for $179 and 5 free movies, this is the best value going for high-def movies if you own an Xbox 360.
What about the $1000 Blu-ray players that will never be able to do PIP and internet features? What about the Blu-ray players being sold today that may not be compatible with the new October specification?
I’d say $179 with 5 free movies is a low risk / high reward way to add high-definition movies.
This site is good for rumors and breaking news, but sometimes there are some really old, lame things posted.
HD DVD and Blu-ray are both growing and doing fine. If you own one or the other, you have a great selection of movies. Who knows, HD DVD might announce a big Wal-mart deal down the road.
At the pace PS3 beat 360 by, it would take 2 years to catch up, and that's assuming Microsoft doesn't sell another Xbox 360 system.
This is going to move systems big time!!!! JK :-)
Looking good for the 360!
This is a blow to Sony, who was counting on this as a hit. But I've liked some games with low scores before, hopefully they will release a demo so we can judge for ourselves.
They put "laughing on way to bank" in the title, maybe you should talk to them.
On the way to the bank to take out money, right? They are losing $200 on each console sold!
Why take away the lowest entry point to the system? I’m not sure why anyone would buy the core, but you get a lot of good press by having a $250 SKU out there.
Or maybe they are preparing another SKU with built in HD DVD and they’ll shift everything down with another $50 price cut when it launches?
If you have a 360, download this demo. This looks way better than last year's game. The graphics are better, the flicker is gone and it runs super smooth.
The simple fact is Xbox is #1 right now when you combine system and game sales.
Coming soon: $50 price cut, Bioshock, 60FPS Madden 08, Halo 3, GTA4 - It's only going to get bigger...
This site is becoming a joke. Every possible positive for Blu-ray is posted and every little minor negative for HD DVD is blasted with huge headlines.
HD DVD will be around for a long time. It is leading in standalone player sales, Microsoft is starting to step up its support, millions of HD DVD Toshiba laptops are on the way and PS3 sales are way below expectations.
Every time a buffoon executive at Sony says “HD DVD will be dead” they are confirming the fact th...
I have plenty of HD DVDs with 1080p, lossless audio, picture-in-picture and extras all on the same disc (Batman Begins is a good example). HD DVD can handle all of these functions at the same time with no problem. If Paramount is being lazy and not putting them on HD DVD, than that is exactly what it is, them being lazy.
The movie '300' has more on the HD DVD version, so the "disc size" argument doesn't hold water with me.
For all of us gamers who have ...
I was hoping they'd go $100 off each SKU, but this is a good step.
No, I have an iPod. I also have a PS3 and Wii for that matter.
I just prefer Xbox 360 and HD DVD.
Here is my setup if you want to see.
I'll be picking up the best version available... on HD DVD.
More special features on the HD DVD version.
Web based features on the HD DVD version.
Better review scores for the HD DVD version.
Yeah, this was Sony / Blu-ray misleading the public and Target is set to issue a new statement next week. Blu-ray is also under investigation by the Europe union for "behind the scenes" business deals. Finally, I learned today that Sony was investigated by the US department of justice when they conspired against HD DVD before both formats came out.
They are doing everything they can to keep low-cost, high definition media out of conusmer's reach, they want to force Bl...
There is a Toshiba form and one for the Xbox 360.
