This pie chart means absolutely nothing. I guess anyone can put numbers into Microsoft Excel and make it look good for their format. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” made over $100 million at the box office, yet I’m hardly sure it would sell high-def players if it was released. Should I make up a pie cart citing the fact that HD DVD has over 70% of the high-def standalone player market? We’ll call it “Pie Chart Assures of HD DVD Victory.”
Absolutely worthless….
Stop making excuses Sony. You got greedy and made a machine that can pay you royalties when someone buys a game AND when someone buys a high-def (Blu-ray) movie. The only problem is: it cost so much to do so, that the system is sitting on store shelves and 3rd party developers are moving to your competitors. It’s your greed that will end up killing you in this round Sony. You forgot about your core audience, gamers who play games. Instead you shove Blu-ray at us. It delayed the launch, jacked...
Let's face it, they are in 3rd place, well behind in sales. They are losing the exclusives they counted on for so long. They would still be the most expensive at $500. Blu-ray is proving to be no better than the cheaper HD DVD. The better version of Madden is going to be on 360. To top it off, Sony is losing money each time it sells a system.
This ship is sinking fast...
"gimme some of the $hit you're smokin'"
Very thoughtful retort. Obviously you couldn’t argue with my facts, so you respond with a childish comeback.
The xbox failure rate is about 3%, don’t believe these fanboy postings. I have two, one from launch and a new elite, and I’ve never had a single problem.
The PS3 is failing because they decided to include Blu-ray, plain and simple. A PS3 with a normal DVD drive for $200 less would be just as good. But no, Sony is using gamers just to say “we sold x number of Blu-ray players.” Thankfully, most gamers aren’t buying it, as PS3 is getting destroyed by 360 and Wii in the sales data....
You can fit more data on a SD card and they nearly cost the same to produce. The problem with UMD is spinning the disk eats up battery power, a big problem for portable devices.
Why does Sony try new formats every time it releases a game console and make us gamers pay for it? A PS3 with a normal DVD drive for $200 less would be just as good. But no, Sony is using gamers just to say “we sold x number of Blu-ray players.” Thankfully, most gamers aren’t buying it, as PS3 is getti...
Of course PS3 boosted sales of Blu-ray! Without PS3, Bul-ray would be dead. Their standalone players are overpriced and will become obsolete come November when the new Blu-ray spec requires internet connectivity (no standalone players have a network port).
HD DVD has captured 70% of the standalone player market. That tells me who's really going to win the next gen format war.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion I guess, but some of the things people post are pretty childish.
I’ve owned a PS3, 360 and HD DVD player since the day each of them launched. I have them all hooked to the same 60inch 1080p Sony TV.
About 2 months ago, I had 5 Blu-ray discs and 5 HD DVDs, then I decided to choose a format, meaning that if the same movie came out on both, which would I buy? I ran a couple tests, showed some friends, did some research and every...
This puts Blu-ray & HD DVD at about the same amount of movies. I think it's important, when someone walks into Best Buy and sees the HD DVD selection is the same size as the Blu-ray section. Then they see they can get an HD DVD player for $200 less, it makes the decision a "no brainer."
This is about deceptive, behind the scenes deals, that are keeping studios only supporting Blu-ray. As a consumer, you should be happy about this investigation no matter what format you support.
I think adding Blu-ray was a huge mistake! It added 6 months to a year to the launch and it added hundreds of dollars to the price. By the time it came out, they couldn't make enough Blu-ray components, meanwhile the Xbox 360 had a 10 million user head start and a cheaper price.
Looking back, I never thought I would say this, but Microsoft was smart by making HD DVD an optional purchase, not force you to pay for it like Blu-ray.
I don’t think HD DVD laptop sales will have the same impact that PS3 sales have had on Blu-ray, but it is a great thing. Toshiba is using its laptops to get HD DVD in people’s hands (and minds). “Wait, I’ll get HD DVD because I can play movies in my laptop too!”
And think: Toshiba does sell 10 million laptops a year! 10 million HD DVD owners cannot be a bad thing!
This just goes to show what terrible management they have! Choosing Blu-ray over HD DVD, before a clear winner has even been established, is just another stupid move by them!
What's the name of this video? "Snooze Fest?"
Instead of these fancy videos, why don’t they have a video that explains why every single standalone blu-ray player (excluding PS3) is being sold without an Ethernet port and therefore will become obsolete this November when the next Blu-ray standard is finalized and it requires internet connectivity.
HBO is owned by Warner Bros, which supports both formats. They already released “The Sopranos” (part 1 of season 6) and I know “Band of Brothers” is available in Japan on HD DVD (not sure about other regions). If you look on the HD DVD promotion site ( http://www.thelookandsoundo... there is an HBO logo on the bottom.
As an HD DVD fan, it’s nice that we’ll have 1,000 extra indie films available, but I don’t think it will have much of an impact for the average consumer. Certainly this attests to the fact that HD DVDs are far easier and cheaper to produce than Blu-ray discs.
The best way Microsoft can help HD DVD is to lower the Xbox drive to $99, they would double the install base. How about an E3 announcement next week???
I don't know, the fact that 2 xbox 360 configurations are outselling PS3 and the 360 HD DVD add on is selling better than any stanalone Blu-ray player tells me that those who want high-def movies are buying the add on. The PS3 is high up there, but who knows what they are using it for. I have a PS3 and I use it for games only.
Oh, and these numbers are for the UK only, look near the top. I'm talking about US only, were HD DVD is gaining market share quickly.
HD DVD had a bad first quarter and gave Blu-ray the lead, but since May, HD DVD has doubled their install base and Toshiba has captured over 70% of the stand alone player market and even that number is growing. Personally, I'd rather be the one with exploding sales and a huge market share then the format that is entirely dependent on the PS3, with a technology standard that isn’t even finished.
Many people believe that when the PS3 starts to get some new games, Blu-ray sales wi...
Here are the numbers for the week ending July 1st:
Consoles Sold: XBOX 360 - 44,083
Consoles Sold: PS3 - 17,902
Games Sold: XBOX 360 - 622,994
Games Sold: PS3 - 220,218
So Microsoft may have missed their sales targets, but they are still doubling up on PS3.
