If by "Bluray > HD DVD" you mean costs more, then you are right. When it comes to features, stanalone player sales and overall value: HD DVD > Blu-ray.

Considering HD DVD owns 70% of the standalone high-def player market, Sharp is lining up with the wrong side!

Seriously, without PS3, Blu-ray would be in huge trouble. Just like UMD, mini disc, Beta and every other Sony backed format. And considering the latest PS3 sales numbers, I’d say Blu-ray is in huge trouble!

HD DVD & Blu-ray use the exact same compression codes (MPEG2, VC1, etc..) and the same sound codes (True HD, etc..). So why would anyone buy a Blu-ray player for $200-$300 more? The size of the disc? Most HD DVD movies use the dual layer 30 GB and most Blu-ray movies use the single layer 25 GB, so it’s not that. Planet Earth shipped on 4 discs for each format. “Lair Lair” on HD DVD fit on a single layer, 15 GB disc. So 30 GB is plenty big enough for any movie. What about interaction? HD D...

My point exactly, you posted reviews for Blood Diamond on both formats and the HD DVD version got a half star better.

I wonder if Blu-ray sales will take a dip now that PS3 actually has a game worth playing? We'll see.

This is good news for Sony, looks like the PS3 has a hit on its hands. However, it should be noted that the sales would likely have been double had it been released on the 360. Just look at "the Darkness" released on the same day for both systems:

360: 110,818
PS3: 52,632

How many companies are going to continue to release PS3 exclu...

You force gamers to buy a Blu-ray player when they by a PS3 (whether they want it or not) and now there is talk of shady behind the scenes deals with movie studios. You just couldn’t fight fair.

Let’s not forget that Sony wanted more of the royalties, thus choosing not to unite formats, and the reason we have a high def format war today.

I hope PS3 & Blu-ray fail and Sony’s greed will be what killed them in the end.

Someone find the guy and tell them the better version of Madden is on 360 this year and the better versions of '300' & Blood Diamond are on HD DVD, not Blu-ray.

They should be able to do an exchange, if he kept the receipt.

I never take advice about gaming from a bearded guy with thick glasses.

It’s advice my father passed down to me, and one day I will pass down to my own son.

See posting 40.4 - $99 HD DVD players are going to be hard to ignore.

It proves that those people who are going out to buy a machine to do one thing only, play movies, are choosing HD DVD. Of course PS3 gave Blu-ray a huge head-start. But HD DVD has doubled their install base in the last 2 months. Whispers of very cheap HD DVD players ($99 even) are starting to get louder, and this is a price point Blu-ray simply can’t match yet, manufacturing Blu-ray components is much more expensive. Let’s not forget HD DVD Toshiba laptops are already appearing (Toshiba sells...

Hey, who knows, maybe PS3 has heat problems too. We may never know, as most of them stay off all day, there is nothing to play on them.

Who's moles are confirming the price drop? Ken Kutaragi's? A talking mole? This is real news! Call CNN!

I know Sony fans will use this to bash Microsoft, but you’ve got hand it to them: they are taking it on the chin and doing the right thing. As gamers, most of us have no idea how complicated it is to make these consoles. There is a problem and they are doing what they can to fix it. Now let’s move on.

Sony had problems with Blu-ray discs rotting. They recalled and replaced them. We moved on.

Sony should have never included Blu-ray with PS3. They are losing $200 on each console sold and it’s difficult for them to cut prices because it undermines the price on their standalone Blu-ray players. Just remember, Sony is USING gamers to subsidize their Blu-ray project. They expect you to pay whatever they want because they put a PS logo on it. Without PS3, Blu-ray would have only 30% of the market & HD DVD would have 70% (in standalone players, HD DVD has captured 70% of the market)....

Just to give you an idea: Microsoft has multiple billions in the bank and a consistent revenue stream from Windows & MS Office. This is a drop in the bucket. If Microsoft needs to do a price cut, it can do so, no problem. Right now, they are more than doubling PS3’s sales every week.

What would really concern me would be Sony losing $200 on each console sold. What kind of business model is that? The more you sell, the closer your company gets to bankruptcy?

Holy moly! This site has gone total PS3 & Blu-ray! Even positng Blu-ray pie charts that someone made at home using Excel!

I guess PS3 owners don't have games to play, so they are submitting news to this site more often then 360 owners (who are busy playing great games).

Halo 3 along with the better version of Madden Football (60 FPS!) is going to be a two-punch combo that will really put the beat-down on PS3.

"another indication that Blu Ray is on the path to being the winner here."

No it's not. Listen, the high-def formats are just getting started, nothing has been decided. HD DVD has captured 70% of the standalone player marked. Imagine standalone HD DVD players going down to $199 and the 360 drive going down to $99 (both are expected soon). The lead Blu-ray got from PS3 (which is already shrinking) would be wiped away in a few weeks.

Yeah, it's been a tough day for Microsoft. It should not be mistaken however, they are still in a much better position then PS3 in almost every way.
