According to wikipedia, the Sparking series consists of only 4 games--Tenkaichi 1-3, and Tag Team on the PSP.

So... maybe this bodes well?

Diablo III is a far better game than either of its predecessors (if you remove that veil of nostalgia). Sure, some things are a bit "inferior" -- smaller areas being the biggest aspect, I'd say, as well as the limited nature of the randomization... but still well within acceptable limits.

The only real problem with the game is the always-online stuff... but that's not really a problem with the game itself, rather a problem with how players access the game. ...

Does anyone actually go to metacritic for qualitative game reviews? Really?

I see it as more of a resource to gauge how consumers react to various aspects of a given product. When you see this kind of massive negative feedback, it's very indicative of a developer doing something really, really WRONG.

Diablo III is getting blasted for having godawful DRM.This is a very valid point, and this kind of "controversy" is really the best way to make the...

Not... really. HD means no Wii, and as stupid as Bandai is, it'll be a cold day in hell before they release another 360-exclusive.

Which means it'll be on PS3.

Which might SOUND nice at first.

But then you realize it'll be the best Tales Of game in history and will never see a release outside of Japan because WE CANNOT HAVE NICE THINGS.

The best game no one played was Steambot Chronicle. A fantastic JRPG that came at the end of the PS2's life-span, with real time mech combat, customizable mechs, an open world, music-based mini-games, and a genuinely branching storyline with multiple endings.

It was beautiful.

And then there was going to be a sequel, and then the sequel was going to be moved from the PS2 to PS3, and we saw some awesome screenshots, and then the game went into development ...

The Witcher and its sequel have managed to recapture a very simple, very subtle fact that most western game developers seem to have long forgotten: a choice is meaningless if it has no consequence.

Most developers understand this well enough from a mechanical level--if a player chooses low-quality gear to equip himself, he won't do as much damage. A choice, and a consequence.

But it comes to narrative, most developers just half-ass things. The Witcher and...

Nintendo ignored their core audience; Nintendo of America looked at their core audience and said, "you know what? **** you guys."

Change is in order, but I'm not altogether positive change within Nintendo proper will "trickle down" to their international branches.

I usually agree with you on most things, Godmars, but... not this time. I think the real thing that needs to happen is that there needs to be better implementation of excess party members. They shouldn't be silent and do nothing... they should have a role in battle. FFX handled this very well with the swapping system.

Mass Effect is an interesting example (and Dragon Age, too, for that matter) because pretty much EVERYONE really enjoyed the 'flavor text'--that is,...

...JRPGs are still RPGs.

The RPG genre is... the single least cohesive genre out there. No need to quibble over the label.

Reason number 1: ass-faced developers like Blizzard and Ubisoft that REQUIRE us to play online.

Many SNES games have aged better than Final Fantasy 7.

2D art ages better than 3D art. Hell, it's only in the past few years where 3D art has managed to look as crisp as older 2D art.

Too bad the online stuff won't work for us importers.

Still, Artdink knows there stuff; this game's gonna be great.

No. World of Warcraft II will make a dent, though.

Sure, part of the reason no one can topple WoW is because WoW already has a huge chunk of the player base and most people aren't going to pay obscene monthly fees for more than one MMO at a time. You know, what with time being finite.

The other part being that Blizzard actually spends a lot of time and effort making sure their games are as close to perfectly executed as possible.

Which is...

Top 10? You only need to do two things:

1) give it an entirely different battle system (based off 12)
2) give it an entirely different level design (based off 12)

There. Job done.

I believe we're talking about God of War as a franchise, not the first game in it.

And narrative quality is NOT dependent on medium.

Probably because most Zelda fans recognize just how important nature is to the overall themes and and underlying concepts of the Zelda franchise, and most future visions involve antithetical design elements. Urban sprawl, densely populated cities, etc., etc.

Of course, there IS a segment of the fanbase that's determined as hell (for some reason) to see a grimdark Zelda in a dystopian setting.

Utterly irrelevant (and inaccurate). GoW's writing is not good... by any metric. I get that you like God of War. That's fine, so do I, but when someone criticizes a game you like the one thing you DO NOT DO is attack that person for liking someone else.

Obviously, you must be a big fan of Game of Thrones--those ******s all say crap like this.

But why, exactly? I spent three or four hours with it and it did nothing to capture my interest. I keep see people refer to it as one of the best DS RPGs, but the time I spent with it made me see it as one of the lesser ones.
