Actually after I watched that gameplay commentary I changed my mind and pre ordered the game. It just goes to show how misunderstanding, or misjudging a came can affect perceptions. I really hope Death Stranding does well.
This is always the problem when developers try something new, and why publishers always get nervous. I can't understand why the gaming media thinks being hyper critical is somehow a virtue. They only serve to make developers less likely to take risks and give gamers new gaming experiences.
Death Stranding will definitely be the most controversial of the bunch.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Sony's E3 2106 was by far the best imho. That God of War reveal, Spiderman reveal, Death Stranding reveal, Days Gone reveal, Crash Bandicoot, the Last Guardian release date, etc etc.
It was Sony's greatest E3, as that's when they decided to cut the fat and just focus on excellent games. That approach has lead to so much of their success this gen.
Interesting article (if a bit tl:dr - I did read it all though). I agree that Kojima is an artist, however, I think you're being overly reductionist in your assessment of Death Stranding. As with everything, a game is more than the sum of it's parts.

Kojima is a genius. I'm sure there's much more to the lore for this game, and that's partly why people are so crazy for Kojima's games - great gameplay combined with deep and convoluted lore.

It seems you haven't really played any Kojuma games. They always have quirky moments , but their gameplay is usually excellent.
You really don't know Kojima if you think this is him overindulging.
I don't think there was ever any doubt in anyone's mind that TLoU2, Ghost of Tsushima, heck even Death Stranding - will have PS5 enhanced GOTY versions.

I did find it odd that the game was given to reviewers so early. I can't remember a game going to reviewers nearly 3 weeks before release. I think Kojima had this game planned for a long time, but Konami had him on MGS lock-down for decades. Hopefully this will be his magnum opus.

That's exactly the same issue I have. It just reminds me too much of Fallout, and after Fallout 4 I think I've just had enough of all that. The other thing is that I'm saving up and can only really get one game, between Modern Warfare, Outer Worlds and Death Stranding, I'm a little stuck 🤔
You really should play some of the MGS games, they are excellent. Even MGSV that Konami sabotaged and didn't allow Kojima to complete - is still a great game, and I think it will give you a feel for what's to come with Death Stranding, and the eccentric genius that is Kojima.

Sure there are worse things in the world - like poverty, war, and disease. Which are caused by abuses of power and unethical and greedy practices in most cases.
But when a game is designed from the ground up for mtx and even loot boxes, then you know that all other aspects of the game will suffer for that decision.
