They did absolutely nothing to build confidence of Xbox brand.

I'm pretty sure it was Activision that told them to strip down the game into a bunch of parts so we can keep selling expansions.
All this study proves is that if you expose a child to anything, regardless of source (game, movie, real life)... they'll have an increased chance at wanting to recreate it.
I bet if you played a cooking game and each version of the game was cooking something different... then you ask them to cook something in real life... they'll probably try to cook the same thing they did in the game.
