Giving more than an 8 for graphics that run in sub-hd and has abundant scree-tearing would not be fair to 720p games without screen-tearing I guess.
This is why I give AW a personal score of 8.5. I am a multi console owner, thus I have played most AAA titles on Xbox 360 and PS3. I feel that when it comes to overall production values PS3 exclusives have been setting the standard on consoles lately. This may change in 2011 with Gears of War 3, I'm curious what Epic is doing with it.
I can understand the 9.2 score. The reviewer made it clear in his review, he based his opinion in the context of xbox 360 library. AW is definitely one of the best games the 360 has to offer this year. I agree completely.
6.5 is way too low for a soild game like AW. It's definitely an 8.5 for me.
Remedy could deliver FF13 quality pre-rendered cutscenes in future DLC if they want, but the gameplay will remain in sub-HD. It's virtually pointless to use high res textures anyway because much detail will be lost due to such low resolution of 540p. What I hope they could achieve is enforce v-synch to eliminate screen tearing.
AW would've been amazing if it came out in 2007. Three years later the industry's standards have risen considerably especially in production value and level of polish in games like ME2, U2, GOW3, etc.
Only the most die-hard AW supporter will not be bothered by its low-res, blurry textures. Some of those textures (especially in interior in-door areas) belong to PS2/Wii graphics. It is painfully noticeable.
Here's a walkthru of Obscure 2:

There's nothing original about Alan Wake's gameplay. Imagine games like Alone In The Dark or Obscure 2 with more polish and better game-testing/quality control and you'll get Alan Wake. Solid shooting mechanics but nothing we have not seen before in other games.
Alan Wake thrives on borrowed ideas much like Uncharted. Remedy and Naughty Dog took the best elements of their respective genre and polished those ideas to near perfection.
You really can't trust a reviewer when they don't mention the obvious flaws of AW. From all the reviews I've read, the 1UP review is the most dead on nail on the head description of the game.
I have completed my 1st playthrough of AW and I agree with everything 1UP said about it.
Listen man, you don't like what I say because you know it's true. Alan Wake graphics is like having a girlfriend with a pretty face but too bad she got Austin Powers teeth. She may look okay with her mouth closed but once she smiles she ain't that pretty no more.
I have finished AW, you will see that I am telling you facts about it's gfx once you yourself gets to play it. The low res textures is true, it sticks out especially in daytime. The screen tearing ...
I have an xbox 360. And I have finished Alan Wake. Get ready for massive tearing at sub-HD with low textures all over the place.
There's nothing outstanding about low res textures and screen tearing at sub-hd 540p that's for sure!
This DF analysis fails to mention the LOW RES textures in AW. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on xbox has better textures than AW. Pathetic.
I could spend hours riding and enjoying RDR scenery just like I did in SoTC. Must buy for me.
AW is by no means a bad game. Just not worth the money when there are higher quality games this month (RDR).
I have been following Alan Wake news very closely after the 540p incident. Fans were being misled by bullshots and gameplay clips that seemed to run on a PC devkit rather than actual xbox 360 console. I have no proof however, just judging by the disparity when compared to actual screen grabs from the final copy.
I'm just gonna rent AW instead of buying. Sub-hd and I hear the game still has screen-tearing. My money goes to RDR this month.
I don't think it's gonna be 20-30, more like 10 - 12. Still more than enough for this type of game!
All I want to know is:
Is the screen tearing going to be absent in the release copy of Alan Wake? It's kind of embarrassing to run 540p and still have screen tearing despite the low res.
Uncharted 2 wins not just because of obvious 720p and better textures, but also due to frequent changes of scenery. You get to visit a dense jungle in Borneo, war torn Nepal, a beautiful village up in the himalayas, then to Shangrila! All of them beautifully rendered.
In Alan Wake you don't see much just recycled mountain scenes over and over again.
