I think "disappointing" is kind of like "beauty." It's in the eye of the beholder.
In this case, I watched all the fervor and hype for Too Human come to a grinding halt. Yet I had liked the demo, and my kids had liked the demo, so I bought the game despite the disappointing scores. And perhaps because my expectations had been lowered, I actually liked the game.
On the other hand, I also bought into all the hype over Fable II, bought it, and thoug...
As someone who has had a 360 since launch and has played more than 50 games on it, there's no doubt it's my favorite console of all time.
But having loved God of War and God of War 2, I know that I'm just biding my time to pick up a PS3. After all, I'm a gamer, and I'll play games on whatever console they're on. In fact, if the PS3 wasn't so expensive, I'd already have one.
So I wait for GOW3 before I pick up my PS3... but then along comes the glorious looking Killzo...
It's not gonna sell a PS3 to me.
Here's what will sell a PS3 to me: $300 system, God of War III and Killzone 2.
Bring the price down!!!
And I've said it here before: the Wii is actually competing against the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. Just because it came out in the same timeframe as the 360 and the PS3 doesn't mean it's in the same class. The Wii is a not an HD experience console.
... no one competes with Wii-ners.
That is, yet again, what we've been hearing from Sony throughout the PS3's lifespan: just wait. "We won't catch them this year, but just wait."
Look, MS had a great strategy in this generation. Beat PS3 to the market, get out to a lead, and hold onto it until, at least, the next generation consoles are introduced. Right now they have a 6m unit lead, which I believe will increase this holiday season because of the pricing and because of the economy. It just makes more se...
While I agree that new IPs are tough to get into the market, let's not start on this "cliches are ruining the video game industry." Because they're not.
The old space marines encounter deadly foe cliche, the old princess kidnapped by end game boss cliche, the old "enter your cliche here" cliche... guess what? They're still selling. A LOT. You might think this is stifling, but when video games continue to grow in revenue at a 20%+ clip, when the rest of the wo...
Here's the deal. The PS3 is 6 million units behind. Are they outselling the 360? Yes. But obviously not by enough to close this gap very significantly.
380k in Europe, pretty even in US since the 360's price cut turned things around, and of course the PS3 is outselling the 360 in Japan, but that might not make enough of a difference.
The point is, even if the PS3 outsells the 360 by 1 million units every year, it'll take 6 years just to catch up.
You know, the PS3 has been out for 2 years now, and all we've been hearing about is "Just Wait until next year" and all this untapped potential and blah blah blah. That's great. I like to play games NOW. Stop spouting all the crap that still isn't here yet and talk about what you do have: a couple of stellar games, a lot of solid games, too many crappy ports and a lack of exclusives because Sony didn't jump on them like they did in the last gen. Cry all you want, but MSFT got aggres...
You guys are a riot. "X360 is dead in Japan." Like, duh. X360 was dead in Japan before it even launched. Anything the 360 gets in Japan is gravy, and of course PS3 outsold it last week 6:1 and will do so again this week. But on 11/20 The Last Remnant is coming out in Japan, exclusively -- for a short time -- to the 360, with an exclusive 360 bundle for the game. Gee, why isn't anyone buying the 360 in Japan the last couple of weeks? Because they're waiting for this to come out!!! <...
Hitting its stride! On their way down!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Well, he certainly doesn't lack optimism.
It is a Mature-rated game for a reason. The parents should not be allowing their kids to play M-rated games. Heck, my kids aren't allowed to play any FPS regardless of its rating. Be a parent to your kids. Don't let the video game console be their parent.
I don't get it either. I'm skipping this one.
Okay, so earlier this year I said "no way am I gonna play CoD5. I'm not going back to WWII. I don't think Treyarch can do this justice."
And then I got my hands on the beta a couple of days ago. Frankly, it feels like a CoD4 (not surprising, since it's built on that engine)expansion pack. Imagine getting a ton of new maps, new weapons, new perks, etc for CoD4. That's what this feels like. Sort of like Rock Band 2. :-)
So am I going to buy CoD: WaW? Yes.
I would have added a few others that look promising:
Dragon Age: Origins
Alpha Protocol
Rise of the Argonauts
Borderlands
Darksiders: Wrath of War
These are some on my list of games to keep an eye on, and they could conceivably be better than some of the dreck on this list.
Well, I hated RE4, so I thought it was the "over the shoulder" perspective thing, but then I loved Gears of War. So not really sure what put me off about RE4...
Dead Space is still one of those "I dunno" games for me. I'd really like to try a demo before throwing down the bones for it. Anyone know if EA plans to provide a demo?
Fable 2 for me. I can't stomach another 100 hour marathon. I couldn't get through Oblivion and I can't imagine making it all the way through Fallout 3.
Not to mention the multi-platform games: Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, Rise of the Argonauts, Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider Underworld.
So in addition to having a great exclusive lineup, there's also a set of games that are multi-plat that will rock. And if all you have is a 360, then there's gaming goodness for months.
You nailed it. Reviews of anything (movies, games, TV shows, books, etc.) are OPINIONS. Someone has gotten the chance to play through the game you want to play a little earlier than you, and he has published his OPINION of his time with it.
The only opinion I trust is my own, and to this end developers and publishers ought to be making demos available.
I bought Too Human because I loved the demo, and I wound up loving the game. I think the reviewers who gave it anyth...
The 360 has better longevity than the original Xbox. 10 years? Maybe not, but I'll wager Xbox Next is a 2011 release and that the 360 will be supported for at least 18 months beyond that. So 8 1/2 years is likely.
The problem for Hirai is that the PS3 may not lack longevity, but it lacks appeal. I want to play KZ2. But I'm not paying $400 for a console. Bring the price down to $300, ship KZ2 and GOW3 and I'm onboard. Until then, I'll enjoy my 360.
