Too much nostalgia. I've played PS3 on CRT. Even games like RR7. Everything looked better on an HD TV.
CRTs have loads of drawbacks.
As a side note I've noticed a lot of gamers seem to be eco conscious... Well CRTs are electricity hogs and require a lot more resources to produce. They also flicker a fundamental flaw created by how they functional trying to hack persistence of vision.
The black levels are definitely a plus over LCDs but th...
Uh... That is literally what this article is about. Digital Foundry is a subsidiary of Eurogamer.
@mixelon
Those statements are objectively false.
Do you somehow think those older displays have more picture elements than modern displays?
Did you consider the way those elements are stacked on top of each other?
Of course not obviously or you wouldn't have commented.
Do you even know how a CRT display works?
LCDs and CRTs fundamentally do identical things but they achieve the same fundamental function in very very different ways.

Why not link no rules against it?
Anyway one link I found: https://www.digitaltrends.c...
Leads directly to DF's very own recent video on the topic others are from The Verge, Inverse and Kotaku
So Inverse had this to say: "For most of society, the rate at which our eyes can detect mild fluctuations in light and color is analogous to about 75...
Because they have... OLED screens are better than CRT and achieve higher resolutions. The phosphors of a CRT display also exhibit blur... It is a requirement without this blur and the human eyes persistence of vision you wouldn't see an image on a CRT display at all... But apparently know one here knows how the tech actually works...

CRTs scale practically every image by virtue of how they function.
Please educate yourself:

I only miss how crisp old PS2 games look on them. Other than that... There weren't any actual advantages.
Most of the people here are have their nostalgia goggles on about CRT technology. When even the largest most sophisticated TV manufacturers who made some of the most popular and sought after monitors who really pushed the tech to the next level abandoned it (Sony), then why is everyone thinking CRT is better?
Oh right the power of nostalgia.
Last I heard LITERALLY NO ONE SWORE BY CRT TECH (in the past 10 years).
There are loads of disadvantages to CRT that people are straight up ignoring.
CRTs don't have uniform color output (much worse than the variability in flat panel manufacturing), the additional energy consumption and heat the space they take up and the fact that yes CRTs do exhibit motion blur and only work because of how they hack our vision.
A lot of people who forgot (or never knew) about the cons of CRT disagreed... Why am I am not surprised?
If we're really talking best looking... FROM AN OBJECTIVE TECHNICAL STANDPOINT (which is possible).
The winner so far is Detroit: Become Human. Nothing looks better and has as many effects going on to convince you the world is real plus pristine image quality (which even Driveclub admittedly lacks).
Now Driveclub is still the bar that I hold developers to when discussing world building and immersion and Ghosts of Tsushima looks to possibly rival Driveclub's...
@timotim
Why shouldn't we discuss how most players are still only getting 30hz on XOS? GT Sport is 60FPS regardless of what PS4 you play it on, same for Ace Combat 7 and many UE4 titles on base model PS4s. Of course Pro and X will manage 60FPS better... That should be obvious they're more powerful devices! What's impressive is how many Pro titles also run at 60 FPS on base PS4s. Everyone gets the same gameplay experience regardless of what device they choose.

There's also The Order: 1886 and If we want to look at the best visuals and most immersive game worlds Driveclub still beats the ever loving •••• out of any other game this generation (especially in its own genre) while GT Sport also maintains much more realistic but also more static visuals than anything on Xbox One/S/X and is also 60FPS and as an added bonus it doesn't rely on temporal reconstruction to manage 60FPS on PS4 Pro (though it isn't running at native 4K either, but th...
Ok then... It's completely false and reminds me of those pointless Blender vs Cinema4D comparisons.
They both offer the same features and thusly both offer the same output capabilities. One is free the other isn't and as a result people just falsely claim that Blender is worse.

Google: Did you mean Astral Chain?
And you can practically transform any stage with all the damage you cause!
Good enough opinion in my view.
I haven't had a chance to play it since there is no demo and I don't have the funds to get Game Pass right now (money is very tight for me right now).
So based on what I have seen from Gears 4 and the new videos for Gears 5, reviews and tech dives it just looks like a standard run of the mill game. I don't have a good grasp on the story Gears 4 was fun so I'd assume Gears 5 is more f the same on that front but from the tech perspective it looks average for a large AAA...
Lot of people butthurt by facts going by the disagrees.
I agree with you here. Northlight engine looks pretty great in Control and there's so much more going on in Control than in Gears 5 not to mention Control runs poorly on all consoles as it is including Xbox One X according to the very same team that praised Gears 5!
So yeah looks like the people who disagreed have no idea about any of this or are intentionally dense.
Looks like gravedigger is right...

Apparently no one knows DF is part of Eurogamer and they typically link to DF's YT.
