MAG was not a let down.
But I kinda agree that this game sounds like it might be a bit of one.
What a chump this guy sounds like. He thinks iOS TVs are going to kick the livingroom consoles out? L-o-L.
He lost all credibility with that statement.
Also, the direction MS is going is precisely what I've been stating all these years -- they want to shield Windows vs livingroom invasion. What if Sony and Nintendo consoles replaced the commonplace uses of the home PC... like browsing, facebook, netflix... oh wait.
MS was smart to make...
This guy is... really not understanding.
He thinks an iOS TV can boot the other consoles from the livingroom.. lol
Steam, and its ilk, say hello. Same publishers as those who print console discs. Same competition.
@theWB27
" we dont benefit from Steam what so ever"
That's pretty much my point. Why would you not want dirt cheap games delivered right to your machine at any time, again?
So very sad, how many people can't see the benefits of Steam-ifying console games. GameStop laughs their way all the way to the bank with the loyalty of their sheep.
Cheap games is why PC gamers adore Steam. To not believe that the SAME publishers wouldn't want to do the same in another digital marketplace is just plain stupid.
Dropping the price on a piece of kit as good as the Vita would make it more popular... and cost Sony tens or hundreds of millions in losses.
Since they do it for the money, I think a price drop is not impending until the chips can be shrunk (by TSMC) to 20nm -- that'll be in late 2014, by TSMC's current timeline. Don't get your hopes up for a price drop -- Sony would kill the Vita sooner than lose 15 billion yen on it.
I just have one thing to say about this article:
Eurogamer is jumping the gun.
Don't take all rumors at face value... even if they are mostly true. The last part, the part that you missed, or the part that wasn't true, will bite you.
GameStop has so many slaves, who honestly believe that used games are necessary, because game prices are so high, rather than the truth, which is that game prices are high, because used games are sold in a way that does not reward the creator.
The profit margins are so much lower than other similar industries, that the games industry is forced to regurgitate CoD every year to survive. Keep it up with applauding the soylent green, folks, and you'll learn to like it. Brai...
The contract is between the used game retailers and the publishers that sell games new at said retailer.
How do you not understand how those contracts would be invalid, if said retailers were *gone*?
I'm not advocating that GameStop stick around to sell physical new games. I'm advocating that they *vanish* (or, rather become online only, via their Impulse service) -- and then, yes, the *problem* goes away.
Bigger retailers, like Targ...
It's not related to gaming -- the gaming division was one of the few that reported an operating profit.
This is a troll article, when it comes to the gaming division. The only thing that was disappointing about games was Vita sales, but they weren't dependent upon those to profit.
This is a great article.
It stands to reason that the price of new games can,and will drop if used games are out of the picture as well -- thanks to capitalism, and competitive pricing.
How many people, I wonder, realize that the reason digital games prices are the same as retail prices are due to contractual issues with retailers like GameStop (i.e. "we won't sell your games at all if you don't keep the digital price at full retail!"), rathe...
I would actually say its about games, but not games specific to the system.
I consider the early PS3 models to be the greatest consoles ever made. PS1, PS2, and PS3 games, all in one? I can't think of another system that even comes close.
SNES was great -- good enough to get me to buy a Wii, actually. But even Nintendo's amazing library just cannot win against the PS1 + PS2, with the PS3 thrown in to boot.
SNES can't play PS1 RPGs, so I have to call you out on that one. The SNES was awesome, but PS1 > SNES, in the end.
For comparison, the Xenos clocks in at:
8.0 GigaTexels/sec
4.0 GigaPixels/sec
The RSX at:
12.0 GigaTexels/sec
4.0 GigaPixels/sec
The Xenos' eDRAM performance basically makes up the difference in texturing muscle with the PS3. I would wager that it'll do the same for the Wii U. Kinda seems like the Wii U is barely an upgrade over the Xenos and RSX, though.
The 3DS released at an outrageous, profitable price, so Nintendo could afford a price cut early.
The Vita released at-cost, or even a little under cost. Sony would be fools to make a price cut. It's an outrageously powerful piece of hardware -- way smaller than an iPad 3, but with more GPU muscle and a battery that will outlast the iPad (during gaming) -- all crammed into that little case.
People who think $250 is not a steal for that device are complet...
@above,
The trouble is, they never seem to adjust their "formula", despite their mistakes being so consistent.
If they had never corrected their estimates over the years, they would probably have the PS3 at about 60M units right now, and the Wii over 110M.
That's my point -- their weekly estimates are *always* off, even if they fix up their lifetime estimates at a later date.
Okay, I have to say it.
VGChartz has undertracked the PS3 and PSP for years, and overtracked the Wii and DS for years.
I think it *might* be possible that the PS3 and Vita are actually doing a little better than VGC claims, and the Wii and 3DS are doing just a little worse.
They claim to have a small set of sources that they "infer" sales from -- I think those sources might just be a little "tainted" with too much Nintendo...
Actually GPGPU programming has extremely limited applications. It's performance is absolutely terrible on anything that's not embarrassingly parallel.
If you don't know the computer science definition of "embarrassingly parallel", then you probably won't understand my comment. Wikipedia can help anyone with that issue.
I actually also had the same question... no gameplay shown typically means its either (a) not coming out this year, or (b) it'll be rushed/buggy/not-so-great when it does come out this year.
The tiny smidgeon of gameplay that was shown looked... I dunno.. staged?
