I refuse to believe that Ninty couldn't have put together a machine with enough muscle to justify an upgrade over the PS3 and 360.

Say a quad-core Jaguar, as opposed to the PS4's eight-core, and GPU more in line with a HD 7750 or so. Maybe 4GB of RAM? Again, half of what the PS4 offers. It would have been cheap... and at the same time, it would have been *competitive*. There is NO reason a Wii U with a measly 32GB of internal storage, 2 GB of RAM, and that weak CP...

Why should Ubisoft miss the holiday season prime time, for Nintendo's benefit, again?

IIRC, Nintendo dev kits were woefully underpowered until the last revisions, which they delivered only a few months before Wii U release. How is not putting 2007 tech in the hands of devs a *little* earlier a problem caused by the 3rd party publishers, and not Nintendo themselves?

If you think that cramming a game designed for the 360 and PS3 CPUs onto the Wii U's C...

@Jek_Porkins,

By the time the Wii U has sold 8M units, people looking for a new console to play BF4 on will have the PS4 and 720 to choose from.

I think a Wii U sale, to get BF4 on the Wii U over the PS4 and 720, will be kinda tough at that point.

I'm so glad the PS3 finally gets good treatment with multiplats these days. A good PS3 version really goes a long way to show the skill of the engineers behind the games. You can tell a slipshod team by their crappy PS3 port, and always could.

Crystal Dynamics has always been one of my fav developers -- I've always been glad to have TR in their hands. Now for another Soul Reaver!

Name a gaming PC that has 32MB of eDRAM, 8GB of GDDR5, and runs games on a custom OS slimmed down to remove all the clutter of generic hardware support.

You can't.

Like it or not, console have an advantage over PCs, at this point during the console hardware cycle. Even if the PC hardware is theoretically superior -- it isn't practically so, and that's all that matters. Pretending practical facts, like supporting low-end hardware, don't exist...

@Tiquila,

Nope, There's no reason a sheltered PS3 couldn't have a custom OS made explicitly for the purpose of streaming PS3 titles.

4774d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

I should mention that there is basically no reason PS4 owners couldn't have PS3 games streamed to them via Gaikai, once validating that the disc in their PS4 is a valid disc, and assuming that the game is available on a Gaikai stream server -- which probably means it would have to be available digitally on the PS3.

If you can't buy it digitally, you can't expect streaming BC for it -- there isn't some DJ chump who is going to find your disc over at Gaikai, an...

This article has it spot-on, for PS3 BC -- it's impossible without including a Cell and a RSX, and that's just not gonna happen, for cost reasons: you're literally better off just buying a PS3, and Sony is too, for not having to try and sell a $700 console.

It's not about how "powerful" the Cell is (although, watt-for-watt, it *is* more powerful than any PC processor -- it is the most powerful CPU in existence, when you consider its scale relative to...

Yeah, wow. I agree.
Wii U owners should definitely not be allowed to get the latest sports titles, or anything else core gamers on those lame other systems people like to spend a few moments with, while not attending to their Wii U.

Mario and Zelda is all Wii U owners need, right?

Normal people don't buy hardware because other people have hacked it, and made it play old pirated DOS games, or whatever. Ouya doesn't have the established digital distribution of Steam, and there are only a few Android games that ever supported the Xperia Play, and hence have gamepad support -- let alone were designed with a gamepad in mind, which is the real issue.

I don't hate the Ouya, personally -- I just see its business model as a failure. Its a smartpho...

Retailers aren't going to carry the Ouya, because they don't stand to profit from selling games for it. It's a bit sad, but I think the Ouya is basically going to be DOA.

What, exactly, defines the "next-gen feel" of titles that don't actually exist yet?

4781d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

TBH Halo was going downhill while still in Bungie's hands. Its better off under 343i, if Halo 4 is any indication.

I don't think the guys who made Halo 1 are even mostly there anymore -- maybe the bigwigs are. But... let's be honest... the bigwigs are never really the guys who make the games great... maybe they once were, but now they just sign contracts to pay the guys who do the actual work.

Important? You bet. Guarantee of game quality? Nop...

There are a bunch of different factors that go into making a "next-gen" game look that way.

First of all, no game on the PS4 should look better than games made for high-end PCs. Why on earth would they, at least at this point in the life cycle of the PS4? They were probably *developed* on PCs, because no console dev kits likely even existed for the first part of their existence! Note that the Jaguar is *not yet out*, let alone an 8-core version.

Well.. you're right, except that's really not the point, is it? AMD will still have to pay top dollar to get 20nm (and smaller) chips made, anywhere, and for a long while, to boot.

GF and TSMC's costs just get passed along.

Valve isn't even in the same ballpark, unless they produce discs that the retailers can sell and profit from. You think Steambox is gonna be popular without retail support? Think again.

PC games are not going to take over the dept. store shelves, just because Valve decides they want to sell a pre-made PC to PC gamers who.. I guess don't like to upgrade their PCs? Like.. those 5 people who don't want a "console" for that purpose?

Due to the same differences between dedicated hardware and generic hardware OSes that have always made consoles perform years ahead of their PC-parts-list PC counterparts... (Ponder a PC... with an AMD tri-core, a Radeon 1800 XT, and 512MB shared between the GPU and CPU compete with the XBox360? LoL! If you claimed such a PC could compete with the 360, you would be laughed off every forum on the internet)

It'll take a monster PC to compete with the seemingly mid-range P...

Wired is right, in a manner they didn't even mention.

The PS4 will be produced at a 28nm fabrication scale. Likely the first price cut will occur when AMD hits the 20nm fab node (~2015 or 2016 for this to actually hit the PS4), and the next major cut will occur at 14nm (~2019, at the *earliest*). Sony, and all console manufacturers, may be forced to settle at this node, for purely financial reasons.

Here's the rub -- upgrading to 20nm fab tech costs...

1080p is 2.5x the pixels of 720p.
60 Hz is 2x the framerate of 30 Hz.

2x2.5 == 5, which is about how many times faster the PS4's GPU is than the PS3's.

So... you don't want the shaders to be cooler? Don't want better lighting, higher rez shadows, etc? You just want more of the same pixels from last gen? I'll take 30Hz and sub-1080p, if I don't have to look at blocky shadows and simplistic shaders on most of my games, thanks....

Sorry... how does the HD 7850 compare with a GPU that not only has 2 more CUs, but is also rumored to have 32MB of EDRAM?

Be careful with the shallow PC hardware comparisons... consoles have always proven to far outweigh PCs with similar hardware, in the end.
