Does not include keyboard ($15 minimum), mouse ($15 - $80 or more, if you want a good one), Operating system ($100-200). Also assumes you own a monitor, or are willing to hook it up in your livingroom, to a TV with VGA input.

That adds up to more like $750, in my book, but only if you want to actually use it, via KB+mouse+OS. It's $484 without that stuff, for sure.

tobysims: "I will wait for developers and their more powerful engines to push the 360 the way PS3 devs do"

You're going to be waiting a long time. =( You don't think they would have done it already, given the additional year they've had, and the supposed ease-of-development on the 360?

Buying launch hardware isn't as bad an idea as it has been, in the past...

Chip tech is slowing down considerably, thanks to Mr. Physics, who isn't known for negotiating new deals in a timely manner.

This past gen of handheld hardware started out at 130nm, then downsized a couple times to achieve the slimness of the more recent models. The PSP Go is supposedly a 45nm machine, and the PSP-3000 is 65nm.

These new machines will likely b...

Wow. That would end online CoD right then and there.

I hope they do it. The shooter market needs a shakeup.

No Final Fantasy game "belongs to Nintendo"

They all belong to Square-Enix, and can be republished on any platform they choose, at any time.

It's entirely possible that these are the PSP or DS versions, but upscaled. But I agree that it's more likely that these are the PS1 versions of the games, since that would require the least investment on S-E's part.

Wasn't 4.45B their revenue, not their profits? There's a difference... a pretty big one.

@voice_of_reason

Actually, if they added those things, you could just opt to not use them.

That's like saying Forza would be worse if they added more cars.

Checking out the article destructoid posted an hour earlier about SOCOM 4, something interesting stood out:

"Most notably, the game looks great in 3D -- according to Jones, 3D runs at the same resolution as 2D, and both modes are locked to 30 frames per second."

SOCOM 4 has been confirmed to run at full 720p, so apparently it runs at 720p in 3D, at 30 Hz... which is impressive.

If they didn't believe it could compete, they should have kept it, downsized the team to reduce costs, and lengthened the project by 3-6 month intervals until a market opening was ready. A project can improve hugely with a smaller team, and patience.

Most new game IPs really only begin to shine in their final year of development. I honestly don't think Activision has the insight to see a good game concept when its staring them in the face, which is why they only rely on IPs that were successful even before they merged with Sierra/Vivendi/Blizzard.

They have no vision. They're frightened to take risks, and are doomed to eventually fail because of it. The games industry thrives on new concepts. You can milk them...

Marathon HD

Activision won't fund a new IP if they can help it. Marathon is proven, and Bungie owns it.

What a huge mistake Bobby's plan is.

Planning to spend $50-100M (or more, if you include adverts) on every title Activision makes basically guarantees that someday some huge new IP will flop, and Activision will hit rock bottom faster than they can recover.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket, Bobby. Those kinds of sayings don't just magically happen for no reason. Guitar Hero was huge... until you screwed it up and flooded the market. Don...

I own both a 2000 and a Go. The one and only reason I keep the 2000 is for my old UMDs. I haven't bought a UMD game since I got the Go, and I'm very very happy with it.

People whining about the price always gives me a chuckle. Go and price a PSP-3000 with a 16GB memstick, and see what you come up with. If you prefer digital to physical, or portability to having to tote UMDs, the Go is easily the best choice.

Its been long enough now that 3rd party devs should be taking the time to squeeze the extra muscle out of the PS3, and we should start seeing crossplats being as good as, or in some cases slightly better than, their 360 counterparts.

If Nintendo has that same "we already won, just give us your money" mindset, they're in for a lot of trouble, I think.

A lot of innovative games are made by Japanese dev studios, for the Japanese audience. The unique games rolling out of Japan were one of the major reasons the PS2 succeeded so wildly. If the NGP outsells the 3DS in Japan by a large margin, you can expect Japanese dev houses to make exclusives for it -- and then you can expect those exclusives ...

I'm going to guess that Sony pays software publishers to offer their stuff for free to PSN+ subscribers. There was a brand-new $15 game offered for free to PSN+ folks just last nite ("Stackers", which is awesome. I never would have tried it if it wasn't for PSN+, but I might have paid $10-$15 for it if I had known how unique and awesome it was).

So part of that $5M is doled out to 3rd parties, I think.

PS+ is.. inexplicably awesome.

I have sooo made my $50 back, just in free games and discounts.
