Darkness doesn't necessarily equate to nihilism - not by a long shot.
Nothing about this game is nihilistic.
It's not really any more violent than so many other games, but it's the detail that makes the violence in this game really stand out. It's unabated its depiction and not softened in any way. Very raw.

I think the abruptness actually serves it well; people are taken very quickly at times and without warning and there's often not much time (if any at all) to say goodbye. Life can hit us in the face in so many ways mercilessly, and cruelly fast.

I respect your opinion, but for me Abby's portion was surprisingly delightful, and I thought some of the best gameplay and story moments occurred while playing her.
