You're confusing marketing techniques with gimmicks. The two examples you mentioned have absolutely nothing to do with gaming hardware, which is what the article is covering.

And throwing in an irrelevant comment about mature content just shows how desperate you are to change the subject. You really didn't think through your comments before posting.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's past history shows that they just don't want to compete in terms of gaming hardware. They instead prefer to design a barebones piece of hardware, with substandard specs and many missing features, then throw in a gimmick to reel people in. Their primary goal, above all else, is to make a profit with the lowest possible investment in technology.

And based on their last two consoles and two handhelds, they're probably going to follow the sa...

Yep, you pretty much debunked most of the points of this poorly thought out opinion piece. Not sure where people are getting ideas that the NX will be a VR-based system, but Nintendo just doesn't have the technical expertise to create such a product, as can be seen by their last two substandard consoles. And if they don't get a viable new product on the market ASAP, they're just going to continue to slide into irrelevance in the gaming community.

I love all the Sparkle games, have them on PS4, PS3, and Vita. Glad to hear Sparkle 2 is coming to XB1 soon, so others can enjoy it!

No, you don't "know what Nintendo's plan is" at all. You keep saying that it will be a VR system, but you really have no idea what it will be at all.

And let's not forget that Nintendo isn't known for any sort of high end or sophisticated technology, in fact quite the opposite. Their last attempt at "VR" was the Virtual Boy, and we all know how that worked out, don't we?

@PhoenixUp, 100% agree and very well said. Nintendo cuts out every possible feature they can to minimize their costs and maximize their profits, and their customers are the ones that suffer for it. How ridiculous that they couldn't spend a few bucks extra and include a built in Ethernet port. Really tells you a lot about their priorities.

The real problem is that after spending $600 on this, you need to have a very high end PC to use it, so another $1000 or so for that, if you don't already have one. Very niche product that is going to have a very limited audience.

By failing to support their products and cutting support early in life cycles? Doesn't sound that way at all. But keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.

That was a joke, right? You do realize that Bayou Billy is an NES game made by Konami in the 80s?

His point is completely legit; Nintendo has alienated most gamers by producing inferior, low-spec, feature-lacking hardware, and shoving gimmicks down people's throats. They've had a very arrogant, insular attitude, insisting on doing their own thing and not listening to developers or gamers. They're paying a steep price for these actions, and if they can't change course and provide solid, competitive gaming hardware without gimmicks this time, they're done in this industr...

Please, no more of those "PC+Wii U are the only way to go" false arguments. We're talking about console gaming, not PC gaming. Most gamers prefer consoles for many reasons, and in the console market, the Wii U has proven to be a complete failure. Most people would much rather have a PS4 or XB1 than the Wii U; in fact, most people would even prefer a 360 or PS3, since the Wii U is really more a part of that generation in terms of hardware.

Nintendo's "i...

@ Venomous - LOL you're the first person to characterize the Wii U as "state of the art", gave me a good laugh. It's about as far from that as possible, which is why it failed. Weak CPU, weak GPU, no internal HDD (or even a bay for one), measly 2gb of RAM (with only 1gb available for games), no bluray or DVD support, no analog triggers on any controllers, no Ethernet port, the list goes on and on. The Wii U is very substandard in terms of specs, and missing many features tha...

Gimmicks are exactly what Nintendo is known for in their gaming hardware. It's right in the definition of the word:

2c : a trick or device used to attract business or attention <a marketing gimmick>

Unfortunately, their marketing gimmicks don't add to the gaming experience, they interfere with it. The Wii was crippled by the waggle gimmick tied to cheap hardware, the Wii U was ruined by the gamepad gimmick, and again featured substandard hardwar...

Nintendo has very little expertise when it comes to technology in general (just look at the Wii and Wii U), much less with something like VR. Not sure how you came to the conclusion that their next system will be VR-based, but it's a pretty doubtful theory.

Everyone knows what gimmick means in reference to Nintendo's products. You have it right there in your definition:

2c : a trick or device used to attract business or attention <a marketing gimmick>

If it isn't an entirely new console, and you're right that no one knows what it will be, then Nintendo is in big trouble. They desperately need a new piece of gaming hardware with genuinely competitive specs and features; if that isn't what the NX really is, they might as well just not bother.

3804d ago 3 agree6 disagreeView comment

No, the article is on point; all recent Nintendo hardware has had gimmicks cobbled into them, to try to entice people to buy. 2nd screen on DS/3DS, waggle controls on Wii, 3D effect on 3DS, and gamepad controller for Wii U, we're all gimmicks that failed to deliver a better gaming experience (but instead resulted in inferior base hardware in every case).

If the NX follows the same pattern as their previous gaming hardware, they're done in the gaming hardware business....

Both the Wii U and the 3DS are way behind the curve in terms of specs and features; it really is time for both of them to be retired, despite the fact that the "New 3DS" (terrible name) just released recently (and has almost no games that take advantage of the new hardware). Declining sales of games and hardware just reinforces the fact that these systems are reaching the end of their life cycles, and it's time for Nintendo to get something else out ASAP.

While I totally agree that Nintendo needs a fairly powerful console, their past history has shown that they really don't want to put heavy resources into their hardware, which would increase the associated costs. The most important thing to them is having a profitable piece of hardware on Day one, so they can extract profits from it for years. And the only way they can do this is to put the minimum amount of resources into their hardware, then throw in some kind of gimmick to spur sales. ...

No, he said they wanted to offer a "new way to play", code words for yet another gimmick. Everyone wants "something different than Wii U" obviously, the concept behind that console proved to be a failure, despite your misguided claims to the contrary.
