If Nintendo gimps the NX, and throws in gimmicks like they did with the Wii and Wii U, it will bomb hard, and be the last home console they ever produce. Let's hope that they learned a lesson from the failure of the Wii U, and designed a genuinely competitive product, with a full feature set and solid specs. Gimmicks alone aren't enough to attract gamers, that ship sailed a long time ago.

What a terrible article. The author's rationale for buying a wired controller is that his battery packs for his wireless controllers are failing to hold a charge for very long. Wat?

Just use regular (pre-charged) rechargeable NIMH batteries, like the Sanyo Eneloop brand, and have a few extra sets on hand. These batteries hold a charge WAY better than the regular (non-precharged) batteries, which tend to degrade fairly quickly over time.

The battery packs ...

@ Philface - While it's true that Nintendo used to be great in terms of gaming hardware (NES and SNES were both fantastic consoles, N64 wasn't bad either), they haven't been known to produce genuinely competitive hardware for over a decade. Would be nice if they went back to their roots, and made a solid piece of gaming hardware for a change, but I doubt that will happen. Nintendo is just more focused on putting the bare minimum into their gaming systems, to keep costs down and pr...

You do realize that Nintendo didn't put hard drives into the Wii and Wii U, to save money on the hardware? This, despite the fact that all 4 other consoles had internal hard drives (PS3/PS4, 360/XB1)? I seriously doubt that they'll pony up the money to put one into the NX. Let's be real here, this is Nintendo we're talking about, they always set the bar low when it comes to hardware, to keep their profits as high as possible. The Wii U is perfect evidence of this philosophy, t...

@ higgins78 - You only own 20 games, yet the Wii U has been out for over three years?!?! I have about 50 retail games, and 40+ digital games for the PS4, and there are still many games I'd like to get, but don't own yet. And the PS4 has only been out a little over two years! Really, after three years, you'd expect to have a much bigger library of games out for the Wii U, very sad.

Look at the meager list of Wii U games coming this year, and you'll realize that Nintendo really is "finished" with the Wii U. At this point, they are throwing away money if they continue to support it. Time to move on, hopefully the NX will be a better designed product, not bogged down by gimmicks like the last two Nintendo consoles.

You missed the entire point. Why buy a Wii U, which can only play the limited library of games available for it, when you could wait until the NX releases, and play the older Wii U titles plus the new NX titles? That really makes no sense at all.

I was going to say the same thing. If you haven't bought a Wii U by now, it's a much better idea to just wait until the NX comes out (probably later this year). Even if you don't like the concept of the NX, you can always just buy a Wii U for bargain bin prices when the NX releases.

No loss, it sounded like another gimmick anyway.

The Wii U really should be a lot cheaper by now, considering how meager the specs and features are in the console. Doesn't matter how many games they throw in, the hardware really isn't worth this kind of price. And we are basically in the last year of the console's lifespan, so buying one now (at this price) just doesn't make sense. Wait until later this year, and it should be easy to find the console at bargain bin clearance prices.

The Wii was a fad, one that caught on with millions of casual gamers, then fizzled out years before it's competition. Ultimately, it failed to deliver solid gaming experiences, and has been all but forgotten now. And as a result, it really accelerated Nintendo's decline in the gaming industry. No reason to try to spin it otherwise.

GamersFTW is a notoriously pro-Nintendo, anti-Sony/MS website. Most of their articles are trash like this one. Best approach is to just down vote the article and website here on N4G, and just move on.

Story quality? WTF

Now your pro-Nintendo trolling is just unbelievable. 2016 has just started, how can it be "one of Nintendo's best software publishing years ever"? You really need to branch out and broaden your tastes, very sad.

They're called archaic because they refuse to modernize and offer solid, competitive, feature-rich products. Instead, they produce the cheapest possible hardware, then throw in a gimmick to reel people in. Sadly for Nintendo, that philosophy just doesn't work anymore. Low-spec, feature-lacking hardware like the Wii U is simply unable to compete with the much better consoles like the PS4 and XB1.

Maybe they've learned that lesson, and will make the NX a solid cons...

This just confirms the obvious; Wii U is tapering off quickly, and 2016 will effectively be it's last year of getting games, with a few exceptions. Even then, there aren't going to be very many games in this final year of the console's lifespan.

For NX, if Nintendo sticks with gimmicks like they did with the Wii and Wii U, it will be Nintendo's last console produced. Let's hope that they understand the need for solid, feature-rich hardware in the design of...

The key word in your post is "IMO". Clearly the vast majority of gamers don't agree with you, thus the anemic sales and general unpopularity of the Wii U. If people don't really care about Nintendo's IPs, like Mario and Zelda, then the console really doesn't have the "best 1st party line up", no matter how much you wish it did.

They released the "more powerful 3DS" to scam their loyal fans into buying yet another 3DS model. Only one game requires the new 3DS features, otherwise the system is just a huge ripoff. And quite honestly, the "New 3DS" is what Nintendo should have released on Day One, not this late in the system's lifespan. Instead, they released the original 3DS, with a tiny screen, slow processor, and crappy 3D effect.

The screen resolution of the 3DS really is awful. 400x240 ("per eye"), lower than even the PSP, which was 480x244. Too bad they gimped the resolution in order to accommodate the 3D gimmick that most people just turn off.

Nintendo 64 games, with their blurry low-res textures and ugly 3D models, haven't aged well at all. I loved the original Turk for the N64 (still have it), but I'm not really interested in this remaster.

"Don't like Wii and/or Wii U 'forced gimmicks' - don't buy either."

Yep, good point, and most people didn't buy the Wii U, so they didn't like the forced gimmicks either.

The Wii didn't "open up gaming", it just (temporarily) got casuals interested in gaming, but then the fad fizzled out, casuals grew tired of the waggle gimmick, and the console had an early death (it died years before the 360 and PS3, which ...
