That Sony is betting their entire farm on Blu-ray not just becoming the dominant next-gen video format, but damn-near monopolizing it. Of course, at the store level, the little worker drones will have no idea if Sony is offering kick-backs (which is HIGHLY likely), they will be told things like, "the company makes more money on Blu-ray players" because they are so expensive, etc. But Sony HAS to win this fight, they lost the Betamax, Minidisc, SACD, and UMD battles already, and ea...

It isn't about what a system LOOKS LIKE but about what it can do. That said, just like in many other areas, it appears that Microsoft did focus-group testing, etc. and ASKED people what they thought a next-gen system should look like, and took the advice to heart. Sony, on the other hand, as usual, just decided arbitrarily what the PS3 would look like, because "it will sell just because it says Playstation." By the way, anyone notice that the PS3 has gotten a lot larger and full ...

Isn't there only one commercial HD-DVD player available as well?

There is a demo released on the Marketplace on Oct. 31st (perfect timing-- although I'd rather it were earlier, but Halloween is my prediction) and the same demo is on the newest Xbox 360 retail demo disc, which will be shipped to all retailers who have demo units the very beginning of November. So people coming into Gamestop on Nov. 17th (if the PS3 actually launches on time) looking in vain for a PS3 will be able to see Gears of War and Forza 2 (as well as Viva Pinata for the kiddies)with ...

Is that the Cell was jointly designed for a reason-- Sony for the Gaming applications, IBM for the Scientific uses, and Toshiba for future electronics. It may be BETTER at scientific calculation, but can still run game code, etc. The PROBLEM with this, is, in the end, this muti-functionality has made the PS3 harder to develop GAMES for. Lots of developers have pointed this out. Does this mean there will be no games that look awesome on PS3 and take advantage of its raw power? No, only th...

Some day, PS3 demo units and Xbox 360 demo units will sit side-by-side in GameStops across the country, and people will be able to look at games on both and decided which look better (to them), maybe even the SAME game running on both (for reasons to many to mention here, there will be VERY few console exclusives any more). And even then, people will be able to argue for one game looking better, and others will argue for the other version. It is all OPINIONS.

like it says in the article, all Blu-ray movies right now are ENCODED in Mpeg 2 because of problems manufacturing the 2-layer, 50mb discs. Mpeg 4 and Vc-1 will NOT FIT a full-size HD movie on a 25mb disc, so until Sony fixes this manufacturing problem, Blu-ray movies CANNOT and WILLNOT be as high quality as HD-DVD is RIGHT NOW. So even in the future, when Blu-Ray does catch up to HD-DVD in quality, it will still cost TWICE AS MUCH. Sony was willing to concede Microsoft a year head start wi...

Surprise! We have 360's in stock, with all the accesories and games you could want in stock as well. PS3's? Haven't seen any. I hear you can get one on Ebay for $2,000.00. SURPRISE!

Whether some people (kids mostly) who end up talking mom and dad into a PS3, 360, or Wii, might eventually regret their decision because it was based on hype, not reality. I really doubt anyone is reading all the articles about PS3 this and 360 that to help them to decide what system to buy. Your post might give them pause to think, but as for the rest of this mess... God help them.

Funny, yet disturbing and somehow appropriate.

I think that Microsoft will have some surprise game-related announcements to steal PS3's thunder. Revealing an unannounced game or two (Bungie's new IP, that secret title Rare is working on), getting some awesome games out before the PS3 launch (Gears of War, Forza 2 and Viva Pinata, for sure), announcing a Platinum Hits line for 360 (Call of Duty 2, Kameo, Condemned, King Kong, Project Gotham and Perfect Dark to start) for $25.00, a huge boost in Arcade releases, maybe even a free one (Sinc...

Since Sony doesn't really care so much about video games this time around, when and if they make money on the PS3 hinges on whether or not Blu-ray does well. If it can corner the next-gen HD-DVD market, all of the licensing fees from companies wanting to make stand-alone BLu-ray players, PC players, Laptop players etc. and movie companies wanting to release their movies on the format will make Sony some serious cash. Why do you thing Blu-ray movies cost $39.99? But if HD-DVD wins, or even j...

Is the fact that, if Sony does sell that many units, 50 million of them will be sold in 2010 and after when the price has dropped to $240.00 or so. If Nintendo does sell ONLY 40 million, they will probably sell those units in the first 2 or 3 years of the system being launched. This means more software sales for Nintendo, and therefore more money and profit. The reason the Japanese analyst doesn't mention the 360 isn't just because it isn't selling well in Japan (obiously the 71 and 40 mil...

Denies problems with PS2 drives doesn't mean there wasn't one. They lost a class-action lawsuit on the matter, for crying out loud! Sony is good at ignoring problems with their products and policies, they are consumate liers, and this has been proven over and over again...

Have written some of the best sci-fi ever, in my opinion. Although Lucifer's Hammer is another end-of-the-world scenario, it is one of the most well thought-out, realistic ones I've ever come across. Likewise, Footfall is an alien invasion story, but way more realistic and interestind than most in the genre.... and, by the way, didn't Larry Niven write the Ringworld Novels, which were an obvious influence on a certain ring-shaped world called... Halo?

Here is why I bought a 360: American designed system. PS3 is a Japanese designed system. American PRIDE! Seriously, though. Bill Gates, the obvious driving force behind Microsoft. The richest man in the world. Is he a complete, money-grubbing a$$? No, he is the world's largest Philanthropist, donating more money to more causes in history. Researching an AIDs vaccine, getting clean water to african villages, etc. He is stepping down from Microsoft Chairman in 2008 so he can spend ALL ...

Is very advanced tech. No matter what anyone says to the contrary, getting all of those high-end, expensive parts asembled and working together properly will be a headache, and Sony is cutting things close (although not as close as Microsoft did). Remember all the uproar about not enough systems for the 360? It will be the same thing all over again-- only probably worse. I worked at Gamestop when the PS2 came out, and Sony absolutely shafted us and consumers by cutting allocations in half...

Absolutely doesn't need to lower the 360's price for it to decimate the PS3 this holiday. PS3's, even if they do ship on time and Sony can meet their production forcasts (which I think is unlikely) will be hard to find this year, for any price. So Johnny Gamer walks into Gamestop, sees a Gears of War demo playing on the 360 demo unit, finds out that there are no $600.00 PS3's to be had, but that he can get a 360 AND that amazing game running in the window for $460.00. SOLD. Microsoft will...

Add a comment since this is the largest thread I've ever seen. What were we talking about again? How Sony is a bunch of egotistical liers that sold out the next generation of Playstation fans to push a cheaper, crappier Blu-ray player on the market to try and gain dominance AGAIN with a proprietary format? Something like that?

The 360 has the one year head start, Microsoft isn't the new kid on the block, they capitalized this time around on their strengths (listening to what consumers want, working with and supplying tools for developers, etc.), and they have already stolen some of Sony's previous exclusives (GTA 4) and established their own franchises (Like Forza, Halo, Fable), some of which are the biggest in the industry. Plus, people are on to Sony and their false promises and bait-and-switch marketing (a PS3 ...
