I'm referring to the Halo universe as a whole, not necessarily just the video games. I understand what you're saying. Though, in my opinion, books tell a story in a way very few video games and movies can, leaving much of it up to your imagination. And if the Halo universe (or any universe for that matter) offers books, which are canon, that further explores that universe and taking it into further detail, why wouldn't one read them?

The Eric Nylund novels count and are considered canon. The next Halo game, Halo: Reach, is about The Fall of Reach, which happens to be an Eric Nylund novel. How closely it will follow the novel is unknown, however.
