GTA4 is not quite as revolutionary as GTA3, but it's more revolutionary than Vice City and San Andreas, and I certainly find it funner than any of the ones before it.
Multiplayer alone skyrockets the fun factor to whole new heights.
Though Vice City will always have a special place in my heart.
But you're right, GTA4 won't do for the 360 what GTA3 did for the PS2.

In a shocking, unprescedented turn of events, dozens of comparison videos for a game with very similar looking PS3 and 360 versions are being released, and some favor one version while others favor another.

Well, if 3 store clerks in the UK think you should buy the PS3 version, who am I to argue? Even if their reasons have little to do with GTA4 and more to do with upcoming PS3 titles.
Guess it's time to take back the 360 version, buy a PS3 and get the PS3 version.
It actually angers me that both GTA4's SP and MP kick so much ass. How am I supposed to decide between them!?

Regarding AA:
What I've heard is that the 360 has 2xAA (which is helps it look better than a PS2 game, but still isn't great) while the PS3 has no official AA but runs at a lower res, which is combined with upscaling and a certain technique of blurring to remove more jaggies.

Sony has nothing to do with this. They provided the console. It's up to Rockstar to properly write the game for, and test the game on, that console.
It is not Sony's fault if Rockstar failed to locate an issue that may occur with certain SKUs of the console. It's not like GTA4 was already out, and then Sony released a system that the game is supposed to run on.

You know, it's quite possible it was a typo, or that they were debating between the scores, or any number of things besides LOL PAYOFF LOL.
Think about it. GTA is a HUGE franchise. HUGE. Why would they need to pay off internet sites to lie about review scores? GTA4 could be worse than Saint's Row and still sell tons based on name alone.

"Servers being down" has nothing to do with testing. The servers could quite legitimately be down for repair or simply overloaded. It's hard to stress-test your game without a large multiplayer beta ala CoD4.
As for the freezing issue, well, there are any number of articles to discuss that in, and this isn't one of them. Suffice it to say, you're right in that Rockstar really should've caught such an issue if it exists.

Freezing on certain versions of the PS3 console is not "plagued with bugs".
BULLY for the 360 was plagued with bugs. This is not.
But "A few consoles are freezing with GTA4" doesn't bring in the hits, I guess.

Yeah Porky, you nailed it, Microsoft hired a team of dedicated forum posters to spam fake news about a limited number of PS3's freezing due to an issue with GTA4. Instead of, you know, spreading more devestating rumors that GTA4 was killing PS3's or puppies or something.
Even better, they snuck in rumors of it happening with the 360 as well, just to make the rumor seem more real.

The issue doesn't seem terribly widespread, and is likely being blown out of proportion, but it DOES exist in some limited fashion.
Here's the simple fact, guys:
A game that sells more will have more issues reported.
This generation, consoles and games are significantly more complex than last generation. Especially with all the SKUs. So unfortunately, Game X on Console SKU Y might have certain isues but on Console SKU Z it might not. For many games, this may not matter as much because less copies are sold, and thus less are publicized.

Honestly, I think Rockstar could sell both the SP game and the MP game seperately and they'd each be worth $60 a pop.
Sure, the MP game doesn't have a huge number of options, but it's absurdly fun.
I know everyone seems out screaming "overhyped, overhyped, blah blah blah", and maybe it was. I was a little disappointed for the first few hours myself.
But that feeling of disappointment was gradually replaced by that of pure gaming bliss....
