Switch sales are down YoY pretty harshly, but some of this could be attributed to lower sales right before a huge spike when Pokemon Legends: Arceus comes out. PS5 and Xbox Series consoles are up by a significant margin, which is good to see. Those consoles are picking up steam while Switch is starting to settle. It's going to be an interesting year for sales!

The Switch is tracking far ahead of other handheld consoles, such as the 3DS, GBA, and Gameboy. It also being portable doesn't detract from it's success. Any way you look at it, what the Switch has done is an incredible feat. Especially going from a 13.4M console (Wii U) to a possible 130-150M console (hard to tell exactly where it will fall, but it will land somewhere within there).

From the worst selling console since the Dreamcast...

I don't agree that PS4 would have outsold the PS2, but it would have definitely passed Gameboy and could have ended up in the 130M range. The Switch may not even pass PS2 and that console is tracking far ahead of PS4 at this point in its life (This would be around July of 2018 in this time of the PS4's life, so long before they stopped manufacturing enough of them).

That already happened in the 90's lol

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just...

I think that Sony plans to release a large amount of consoles for their big releases though, as is pretty common in the industry. So I think February/March Sony will produce more consoles with a bit of a drought in January or April because of it.

Thank you! I wonder how close Xbox Series was to PS5 in 2021. It seems like there was a big gap earlier in the year, but the holidays gave Series a bit of a boost.

Pokemon: Legends Arceus will be launching in January though, with Horizon 2 over a month later. It will definitely give Switch a boost, but I'm not sure if that boost will carry to two months out for March.

Though Switch also has Kirby in March, but that series isn't as popular as Mario, Zelda, Pokemon or even Donkey Kong. I could honestly think it could go either way, but I think PS5 will edge it out on one of those months.

So Switch is best selling in unit sales for December. PS5 effectively tied with Switch in dollar sales. Xbox Series X/S were second best selling (behind Switch but above PS5).

This tells us a couple things:
1. Switch sales are quite a bit higher than PS and Xbox (1.5-1.75x), since MS and Sony have much higher priced SKU's than the average Switch unit.
2. Leading sales for Xbox were probably the Series S model, otherwise Xbox Series would not be third...

Gaming technology was advancing much faster 30 years ago than it is today. We are actually at a point of diminishing returns today in comparison. Take a look at the 3D capabilities of something like the SNES, then look at the N64, then look at the Gamecube. These are huge generational leaps apart. There were several portable devices that came out showed the improvements of mobile hardware as well. The Gameboy came out in 1989, but in 1990 the Turbografx was already...

The only thing that I would be worried about is it seems that this patent wouldn't allow for clickable analog sticks (which was a small issue for the Vita's controls). However, I think if they included some kind of back paddle button they could mitigate the button issue.

At least 30M. It's probably at 17-18M shipped already, and I think they will definitely sell more than 13M consoles this year. It'll probably be close to 35M shipped by the end of this year.

1. I think BotW 2 will release in 2022.

2. I think there will be a game or two that does get delayed (e.g. Mario + Rabbids).

3. We will FINALLY see some footage of Metroid Prime 4 later in the year. Release window is 2023.

4. No new Switch revisions or hardware in the works, but we do start hearing rumblings about a Switch successor and it's codename (which will be officially revealed the following year in 2023).

Nintendo has said multiple times that they want the Switch to last longer than their home consoles of the past, in addition to what Magog said above. This was even before the Switch had it's huge sales surge in 2020.

The Wii fell of a cliff sales wise, otherwise I'd be willing to bet the Wii U would have been delayed. Wii peaked at FY 2009 (ends Mar 2009) with 25M consoles sold. FY 2010 (ends Mar 2010) they sold 20M. FY 2011 (ends Mar 2011) they sold 16M. In FY2012 ...

There is no way there would be a Switch successor in 2022. Not a chance. I could see 2023, but 2024 is a much greater possibility. Remember, Nintendo said just recently we are in the half-way point of it's life and they have said multiple times they want the Switch to last longer than it's home consoles of the past. Which means 5 years is out of the question. 6 years is a maybe, 7 years is the safest bet.

I agree with you on pretty much the rest of this though.

Super was never because of the Super Nintendo. Super Mario Bros launched on the NES. The Super is because it's an indirect sequel to Mario Bros.

They can just call it Nintendo Sports or something, but using the Wii name would be a bit confusing.

Cmon you disagree guys. Tell me why you disagree. Take that argument about the PS2 and tell me how it would translate differently to the Switch.

@Zeldafan

Your logic with regard to game sales doesn't work in your favor when the Switch has some of the highest software sales of any Nintendo consoles. In addition, Switch has more 10M plus sellers than the PS2 did (PS2 has four, Switch has 11). In fact, the Switch has more games that have sold over 20M (6) on the console than the PS2 has that have just sold 10M.

In other words, this argument basically tells you that Switch likely has more unique ...

When the PS5 gets a slim or a pro version, there will also be people that buy a second or third one. Some people also purchase multiple consoles for their home regardless.

We don't have the data to say one way or the other, so it's pointless to try and extrapolate, so why bother. Especially with one system being four years older than the other.

It just needs 600k more to outsell the PS1, which I think it could do. Good job Switch!
