I read that Nintindo restricted the 64mbit rom chips on Secret of Mana only to release the technology for either Starfox, Donkey Kong or Zelda a Link to the past a few months later. Not sure but it had something to do with Nintindo having the chip technology to have bigger cartridges but they blocked use of those chips for 3rd parties until after their games launched with it.

The result was several elements of gameplay like bosses music etc. where removed from SOM.

This wouldn't be such a big problem if Sony competed with more 1st party JRPG's. If Sony launched a bunch of white knight story quality games like Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy etc. The system would target more players that are interested in JRPGs.

Unfortunately, because Xbox has a bigger lineup of JRPGs it leads the impression that if you want to develop for JRPGS choose the system with the biggest lineup of that type of game. Basically if you choose to develop for a system that has ...

It'll be at one point be cheaper for people to buy a new 360 then send them in for repair. At least the perceived install base will continue to grow even if old consoles are replaced completely. It's not like the install base subtracts the dead disguarded consoles the same way new purchases add to it. :)

This comment isn't reserved to 360 alone, but since 360 has been listed as having a higher failure rate it's impact is greater. When choosing a platform to develop for a consensu...

The price of hardware isn't always based on how much it cost to make the end product. Supply demand and development cost come into play to. Look at the Windows Vista DVD or any expensive software. The CDs & DVDs alone cost very little to mass produce but the software on it is still sold for over $200 in some cases.

Look at the Wii, cheap to manufacture, not top of the line hardware or software yet it makes a good profit from demand. This is why prices of hardware fall. Not be...

The extra FLASH was never used anyway?

That'd make sense for Sony to reduce the FLASH chip to 128MB then put only the first 16MB on flash. Reducing the size of the flash to it's minimum and not fully utilising it for the firmware reduces the chances of it getting perminatly currupted.

It's like one of those old computers using relays. The more relays you have the more risk you have of one breaking. This is the same with Flash. The more you use the flash for firmware ...

The 1 gig could be used as a cache and reduce blu-ray access,

Best option is if some ingenious HDD maker created a smart HDD with more read cache on it. I'm talking 4+ gb. This way once a game stealth loads data without being sent to system ram it'd be available on the cache instead of calling up the slow access drive HDD media or BLU-ray drive..

If Sony just thought put user upgradibe 3rd level SDRAM on these systems they wouldn't have people complaining about the ...

I see why this would work better.

There is a possibly that some or or all of the critical flash is now stored on ROM. This makes the unit less brickible if the flash is damage from accidental corruption. That way if another blunder is made by Sony like the 2.4 update people can just remove the HDD and update the less critical firmware to the HDD.

I'd assume this brings up the security more do to the fact that more of the critical firmware is on ROM yet the less crit...

I like some of these things but I myself want more JRPGS.

Frankly, if I'm not playing my PS3 there is a reason for it. That reason is I want something to play. I think White Knight story, the FF games, Kingdom Hearts or even A new Dark Cloud could change this.

Until then I'm not playing the PS3's is because the games that excite "ME" don't seem exist. I'm not saying the PS3 games line up sucks. I'm saying everyone has a right to believe what they think is ...

My solution is simple.

Allow the user to create a user specified unified cache partition. In that partition games can get installed as the game loads up. As new games get installed that data is replaced.

This might not seem like a super idea at first but bare with me a few more steps and listen to the genius behind this. First off the space never exceeds user specified amounts. Secondly it doesn't require an install. Lastly, the game that's running takes a portion of...

Yea you buy a game full price and then you get free updates only as the original owner.

This causes the pre-owned market problems because that used copy requires a content ID or registration that is only usable by the original owner or the first person to register. Once you register your name to those free upgrades no one can use that code anymore.

The same way live DRM's it's software by linking it to the live account.

Basically what this does is make t...

When PS3 was first launched it had nearly full compatibility. After losing money on the chips and having the prices higher they decided to remove the ps2 hardware to save money.

If they make the next ps4 who's to say it'll have any BC?

The PS2 chips aren't easily emulated. With the Cell your talking a lot more hardware will be requared to make the system BC.

The thing I see here is MS, did something using near PC hardware instead of creating a new CPU. T...

Uninstall should remove everything that was installed.

That's why there is uninstall. So you can remove something you installed. What basis does having that DRM on your system if the game it's there for isn't installed anymore.

It sounds like the concept of having unsafe interaction with your PC is common, install and run anything. If something screws up you just reinstall.

Not everyone is willing to waste time doing this every time some company decides ...

When I first saw it I thought it was a XBOX smear add where they cut out the RROD and the woman was looking at a 360 in shock or irony not awe and amazement.

Seriously..... O.o

I saw the button and them pressing the green ring. I was under the impression that they cut the take just before a RROD. In my mind it turned red and started flashing after the the cut with the woman staring at the screen in irony with an OMG shock followed with a grin.

At first, I truly thought this was a sarcastic commercial like the kid playing the black and white gameboy and smacking himself on the head to get color. Seriously, when I saw that face I thought she was looking a...

Magazine's aren't free they are subscription services. I foresee them doing the same thing they did with GT-TV at one point or another.

I have Playstation Magazine an if I'm a subscriber there I should get those services free.

The worse part about this stuff is most of the news can already be seen on gaming websites like this N4G. Magazine subscriptions are losing money every year simply because the wonderful interwebs and the free content available to everyone.

This isn't rocket science. They'll be adding new equipment taking the sever down and reconfiguring everything. This isn't a plug and play job.

All this downtime cost them money.

#1 New hardware (this isn't free)
#2 Loss of pay services (people can't download $ games music video etc.)
#3 Coordinated engineers testing and restarting the new equipment. (this cost more because more staff are called in)

To put it bluntly if your upgrading to new h...

Why do they do this? Yes the adds are interesting but I hate these adds. They don't connect the entertainment. With this all I think is WTF.

This is how I see it. You're trying to sell a game console not a commercial. People who see things like this are intrigued about the commercial and are sidetracked by whats going on. If someone can't understand the concept within the content then it makes them feel confused.

When someone is confused they can either figure out th...
