Accept that its a debunked rumor when I hear it from either Rockstar or Sony. Then and only then is a rumor debunked.
Meus, with all do respect, I'm going with my gut feeling here. I think that there might be some truth to this. If this rumor isn't shot down officially within the next two days, its beyond a normal rumor.

Once the sales numbers are in for October. If you don't think that this price point will sell units, you are very blind and caught up on a single point that will be insignificant in 08 once the major titles hit. This is a business decision and a very logical one. There will be plenty of PS3 titles to keep users busy. That coupled with the fact the the PS2 is still a core part of their business. Not PS2 BC but PS2 the hardware.

Remember when you played you PS One games on your PS2. I did it for the first year and that was it. People played their PS2 games on the PS3 because of the lack of PS3 games. I would not worry too much about it. It was a moot point back when PS2 was released. Removing BC is the only way to go in establishing a better price point. I am 100% sure that Sony will look into a software solution if there was enough feedback about missing BC. The big news here is that the PS3 is now 299 pounds and not that BC is missing. If you want BC, get a PS2. There will be a price drop for it also this holiday.

If RARE does make Halo, it would make the most sense. The only problem is that this is not the Goldeneye team. This is not Free Radical. This is a new RARE. Could it be done, sure but don't expect the new game to rebuild the engine but rather reuse the assets created by the Bungie team. MS is brave but not stupid. The same thing goes for PGR as I believe Turn 10 (Forza 2) seems like the likely replacement. Turn 10 will need to expand its team in order to do this.
