80Gb PS3's are nowhere to be found almost and same with Elite X360 SKU's. There ARE 40Gb PS3's and other X360 SKU's all over the place. Its just a guess but I bet the Elite is about to be bundled with GTAIV or something and re-released just like the announced 80Gb Snake bundle. If so does that actually count as a shortage, and if it does it means you have to say BOTH systems have a shortage thus the playing field is even.
Sony is breaking even on the $499 PS3 and the costs of the blu ray parts and some reduction in chip costs they can easily drop price also. If X360 drops watch PS3 drop too IMO, if X360 doesn't drop this summer then PS3 will probably drop around mid to late fall, of course X360 would too. Just my opinion I know but if one drops expect the other to follow.

Since when is X360 outselling PS3 in Europe??? Seriously? VG Chartz shows that while X360 sold more lifetime currently than PS3 (with a YEAR+ headstart since PS3 came out late there), that PS3 is outselling X360 regularly over there, even in UK for the past few weeks which was one of the few places X360 was winning in Europe. Ever since NPD came out and showed PS3 trounced X360 in January the followers of that "other" system have denounced NPD also. They are now starting an online poll to gauge systems sold since that is the most accurate way (yes sarcasm there at the end folks).
VG is not THAT far off reality usually, yes they aren't perfect science but they are moderately accurate.
MS is likely pulling Elites to make a new SKU bundle with GTAIV, wouldn't surprise too many of us because they would be smart to milk that $50 million buy of additional episodic content, just as Sony announced the 80Gb SKU with Snake. I can find X360's and PS3's in my town, just not the Elite or the 80Gb, so the shortage theory doesn't apply here at least, or online.
BUT even I have to give Japan to Nintendo and that annoying Wii and DS. Nintendo has reclaimed Japan and still sells decent numbers of PS3. MS knew it wasn't going to do well in Japan, I am proud of them for trying (no that isn't sarcasm).
