Here's my personal list of things they could do.
-Don't lock it onto the disc.
-Don't start making it until the full game is finished and has all the bugs patched out.
-Don't offer it as a pre-order bonus.
-Make it more bang for my buck.
But that's just my take on it. If anyone wants to expand, by all means go for it.
Early access I look at as an alternative to pre-ordering and becoming a game tester. These games are unfinished, so issues are bound to pop up. If you don't want to deal with bugs then you should probably just wait for the finished version.
It can make Nintendo a lot of money and add more functionality and even advertising to their games. Think of buying the Marth figure for Smash Bros. and then Nintendo sends a message to your Wii U saying that you can use it in Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. Amiibo can do a lot of good for the company if handled in a smart way.
Wasn't Liberation criticized as a poor installment to Assassin's Creed anyway? Even if the hero is a female, no one wants to play a mediocre game.

But you're one person versus the hundreds of Ubisoft developers working on Assassin's Creed Unity. Somehow I doubt the level of difficulty is the same in your analogy.
There are plenty of women who play Assassin's Creed. And guys who like playing as women, such as myself.
I don't think there's disappointment among fans. I think less casuals are buying game consoles. People don't talk about it, but casuals actually did buy a lot of 360s, PS3s and especially Wiis. I think there is a little less of that this generation. And that's okay because this is a generation for core gamers IMO.
I guess they want the same personality in a woman's body? I couldn't really say. Also while Spider-man has never been a girl, there is a Spider-girl who is his daughter and in the Ultimate series he was replaced by a half black, half hispanic kid with spider powers. :P
Thor is a demigod. Who the heck said demigods can't change their appearance and gender? :P
But Lucina is a lot like Marth to begin with. When you first meet her in the game she uses the name Marth. I was hoping she would be an alternate costume for him but this works just as well IMO.
Can't say I blame her. I mean she played one of the best female video game characters in the last decade. Were I in her shoes I'd probably be frustrated with that news too.
He could be good friends with the folks at Naughty Dog though. That would make him kind of an insider.
I like Brawl more than Melee too. Smoother controls were a welcome treat and the roster was pretty big in comparison. Melee has some ups that are better than Brawl such as the speed and the no tripping.
Oh man, you gotta check for sure and play it. It's quite an experience. :)

Let it be stated right here that Kevan Brighting is one of the best voice actors ever. His delivery in this game is hilarious! :D

That says more about Wii U than Xbox IMO. Everyone believed it to be dead console. Yet here we are!
Kinect 1 was a monumental success, so I assume 360 had to have some decent casual support. I think people are getting the idea that I think last generation was a casual generation, but all I'm saying is more casuals were buying gaming consoles at the time. There is a little less of that right now and it's because casuals moved on to tablets and the publishers have been mainly focusing on the core market.
