The interesting thing for me is where the CPU for a new machine is going to come from. Microsoft seemingly already have a contract with Ati in place for the GPU of their next machine, but IBM PowerPc development from the past few years has fallen further behind x86 as intel really push the boundaries, and as big customers like apple step further into the waiting arms of intel's x86 family.
Its not inconceivable that microsoft could once again turn back to x86 and maybe ...
The other two are passable for console but indeed red faction is caught there in a horrendous quality shot that makes it look like a PS2 game. PC gamers dont just play games because of graphics but its a big reason to buy a game over console. Onlive completely obliterates all the fine resolution detail which i expect from a game running on PC. if you were a console gamer you might be able to live with that, as a Pc gamer, i wouldnt stand for it...
Seems more like it could threaten consoles than Pc gamers. By most definitions Pc gamers have superior hardware and demand superior versions of games, higher resolutions, faster framerates, better graphics. Console gamers usually settle for less already, they wouldnt likely care about onlive's reduced visual quality but enjoy the convenience- Which is again, what consoles offer.
Although late the original Mass effect Pc port turned out considerably superior to the 360 version with most of the bugs ironed out, the texture streaming/framerate/stutter problems eliminated and the HUD/weapon menu system much improved. Not to mention it included DLC for free 360 owners paid for.
Of course superior Pc hardware helped but it wasnt the whole advantage to buying it on PC. Demiurge did a good job.

It is a piss poor comparison though. GPUs are enormous, a GTX280 has three times as many transistors as a core i7 and they are nearly all logic transistors (logic calculates, cache is just dumb memory), not cache which makes up a great deal of a CPU. It has more transistors than a Tukwila itanium (a massive server CPU with huge cache) Take a GPU's strongest suit, massively parallel floating point performance, and pit it against a CPU. Max payne 2 has aged well indeed, and it is also coded so efficiently. Not at all demanding for the visuals it could pump out the engine was quality. You can easily run the first @ 1024 x 600 on a netbook with the super slow integrated GMA 945 graphics and the second will also run nicely on a slightly newer netbook with GMA3150. If you want good games to play on your little cheap netbook, then these two are a great choice!
Actually a typical 2.5 sata drive is going to be much slower than a 3.5 desktop drive of the same capacity and age. This is because most are 5400RPM, and being tuned for low power consumption over raw performance among other factors.

I dont know why texture streaming should be poor on PC. Many of the textures appear to be low resolution, certainly no better than 512 x 512. Even an aging desktop 500GB hard drive can average read @ 50 or 60Mb/s, much faster than any disc drive and much faster than both the console's 2.5 sata drives.
360's Dvd drive maximum read speed is something like 14mb/s, If this game doesnt stream properly on my RAID 0 setup which is easily ten times faster than that there is...
I have multiple times suffered horrendous palm friction burns and wrist strain affecting my ability to play games. Of course i wouldnt say how they happened. All on my right hand strangely....
Half life series especially from the second on doesnt even need chapter recaps, voiceovers or rendered cut scenes with crazy lip synching....its the pioneer of interactive storytelling. You ARE Gordon Freeman in the game and as a voiceless character immediately engaged in that persona, and you play it through from end to end seamlessly.

The test isnt the best but it still gets to the correct result. Who in their right mind would spend another 100 pounds to get a much smaller drive where they probably couldnt fit all their stuff on, just to save a few minutes a week cumulatively on load times for PS3....
If you are playing online a lot too, it doesnt matter if you load to the game ten seconds before everyone else, you still gotta sit waiting for them to get in the game til it starts!!

Its too expensive to be really worthwhile for use in a PS3. PC maybe, PS3 no. Just get the largest conventional drive you can afford, it's areal density (the more data packed onto a smaller space means that the drive heads move less to retrieve more data) alone will improve performance over a small drive typically, especially for those with 20GB/60GB/80GB drives.
500GB drives are pretty common now and in the uk, sneaking under the 50 pound barrier. You'll never need...

The fastest graphics card in the world now (5970) is a good 4-5 times faster than 2007 when crysis launched (8800GTX ultra).
When it says 'great', take this in your mind and imagine your top 3 games of all time, not of this generation, in ALL HISTORY. Then answer the question. Because its a works from the past versus any work you like from the history of games.
