Every game is a compromise of visuals and performance it just depends what exact style you are aiming for. Virtual texturing's main advantage visual wise is that absolutely no area of the game uses identical textures to the next. Every texture and object can be unique, you dont see the same dull flat wall or floor texture over and over again as in other engines. For an openworld game like RAGE this means you can create impressive 3D vistas and cliff faces with amazing detail. Of course a ...

Its not just that, bitrate is more important. Youtube's 1080p looks decent but still clearly has macroblocking and the performance is pretty poor. Not even close to a Bluray naturally. Its ok saying you support a resolution like that but when you dont support a good encoder with high bitrates it'll look pants

NASCAR would lose horribly lol. This game should run very well because its just a tweak of the EGO engine used in Dirt 2, GRID etc. On PC that means its pretty well optimised and reasonably good looking

What i said was clearly an estimate based on visually what we have seen from screenshots. Psp runs games 480 x 272 and assuming that 3D enabled games on this push 480 x 240 per eye AND a 320 x 240 touch panel for 2D, Its pretty safe to say the machine is more powerful than PSP. Is that all that much of an achievement? PSP is six years old this year as i said, so no one will be exactly blown away. The graphics are only secondary to what nintendo are looking to deliver and that is fresh gamepla...

3DS is a smidgen more powerful than PSP. Maybe twice as fast, at most. Which is rather too much hype considering PSP is six years old this year. It looks good no question but as good as the home console versions?

How do you spell hyperbole

Bizarre tried but they departed too far from what they know IMO. I was really looking forward to a new style of PGR from them, free of the IP. But instead they have gone backwards from PGR4. I think they should go back to their racing roots to that sim/arcade racing mix they nailed so well with metropolis and my favorite, PGR2

This is on a pretty killer connection too. 150ms is borderline acceptable for me, as a Pc gamer used to 60 frames a second in nearly every game- thats a mere 67 milliseconds usually at worst. More than doubling the lag? I would notice it. Especially pushing towards 200ms, thats getting seriously slow when it comes to shooters.

The worst thing has to be the 720p only resolution and compression reducing the image quality severely from a locally rendered game. Literally any du...

''At this point, Gran Turismo 5 would have to be ten times as good GT4 was in addition to offering a lot more than Forza 3 did''

It doesnt have to be ten times better than GT4, and IT WILL offer a lot more than Forza 3 as far as i can see

Does anyone really think killzone 2 and halo are considerably better shooters than the wide range of what Pc has to offer? I certainly do not. KZ2 for one relies on its visuals even more than crysis, which is the better game and happens to look a lot better too. There are dozens of great Pc online shooters that are more fun to play IMO than halo. Take your pick

Following reviews have not been remotely as kind though it seems. sevens, sixes and a 4. Probably average out somewhere in the 7 region if it matters to you

GTX295 has 896mb of memory for games :-) Its SLI on a card. 2 x 896mb. Whatever is loaded into one GPU's memory has to be loaded identically into the other's and mirrored exactly as they work on the same problem but supply alternate frames. Thus the maximum it technically actually has for use is 896mb

Indeed its just a quarter of 1080P but i was always referring to 720P as that is the 'standard' expected from current consoles and the minimum for what is currently claimed as HD. Nearly half, 40 percent less than standard 1280 x 720.

Obviously when you have 1280 x 720 on a 1920 x 1080 screen you are already upscaling the image and doubling its size, but alan wake massively increases that to four times. No wonder fine detail evaporates

The whole thing seems like there are serious consistancy issues. Goodness knows what might happen should it introduce online multiplayer gameplay too. I would take reliability and total control on a local machine everytime

The article is rather flawed relying only on NPD american numbers, not worldwide. 360 versions will usually sell better because of its significant lead in north america. However the scene changes when other regions factored in, because PS3 leads in europe and by a large margin in japan. Western multiplat games are likely to sell better on 360 if the japanese arent interested, and if the japanese like the game then it'll probably sell a lot better on PS3.....

It works fine it seems, but with compromises. Namely image quality. Even a low end machine can match or exceed that being pumped out by onlive without the fees and other associated unattractive attachments. Any dual core and graphics card better than a radeon 4650 will dish out onlive beating visuals

Really, i couldnt care less when theres a few lines of pixels missing on the consoles if they are sacrificed for a good reason. HOWEVER, alan wake in particular doesnt have a few lines missing does it? Its closer to SD than HD, It has nearly HALF its resolution gone up in smoke and on a 1080p screen its bloody obvious that is the case, the whole thing is muddy and indistinct. Upscaling only does so much, it cant replace a whole bunch of lost detail. Maybe i wouldnt even mind so much if alan w...

Immersion matters if we want to move games forward in the perception of non gamers. This will come down to visuals. My grandparents laughed at the original Gran Turismo and fahrenheit when i claimed this were superb landmark titles, but they dont laugh at GT5 or heavy rain, better visuals have helped propel games so they are more believable i guess is my point. No longer childish and appearing as merely a cartoon toy but a serious medium to be savoured. :-)

Uncharted 2 is a technical monster because of what the engine does at once. It manages 720/30 but triple buffered and vsynced so it NEVER screen tears(few console games triple buffer because it chews up 50 percent more framebuffer memory, as 360 only has a 10mb framebuffer most developers dont even attempt it). The engine maintains this at all times, While supporting per pixel dynamic lighting and soft shadows, FP16 HDR + NOA32 2 x AA and anisotropic filtering (high end 360 games usually do F...
