My thought is they are trying to weed out the Basic model first. I feel like once those are out of stock Nintendo's going to just make black and white Deluxe models and slash the price by at least $50.

None of those releases redid the graphics at all. They raised the resolution and added achievements/trophies and that was pretty much it. Nintendo's remakes always completely redid the graphics akin to Halo Anniversary. An HD collection is different from an HD remake.
Um... Nintendo explained this when they first announced the remake. Zelda Wind Waker HD uses assets that were developed for the brand new Zelda game which is coming later. The remake is there to hold over fans while they develop the newer game.
What I think he meant is many 360/PS3 games were not in full HD, as in rendered in 1080p and he's actually correct. The amount of 720p rendered/upscaled games far outweigh the games that are in native 1080p.

Also, I doubt anyone other than the occasional fanboy expects the Wii U to dominate. However I do believe sales can get better from where they are now. Games and marketing are what Wii U lacks and both of those are coming soon enough. Possibly that can turn the whole thing around, not to dominate or even make Wii sales, but just to do well enough as the N64 did.
