Dominance is never good.

Last generation 360 was ahead of PS3. MS coasted midway and toward the end of the gen, then brought the marketing trainwreck with X1...

PS2 dominated the previous gen so Sony put out the $600 version of the PS3 with very little games early on...

Now PS4 is dominating and Sony has been more or less a sleep at the wheel this year outside of Bloodborne. PS4 is relying on third party, Japanese exclusives to differentia...

This is a spit article for all the XB articles about Backwards Compatibility.

XB fanboys in the press make an article when anything happens on the BC front.

PS fanboys in the press make an article anytime they see a resolution difference between PS4 and X1.

Quantity does not automatically mean Quality.

I still prefer 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party published games over indies.

EA's fiscal year is March 31 so releasing anytime before that would be fine from an EA perspective.

Holidays are an important time for sales, but it just changes the market tactics.

Games that come out in the February/March time frame don't get as many sales, but once next holiday rolls around they put out a "Complete Edition" and get the second sales bump during a holiday.

I don't buy that BS at all.

Bungie left MS because they wanted to independently develop games. DICE can do the same if they really are that much against EA.

DICE is as much at fault here as EA is. If not more.

If EA is forcing DICE to release early, then why don't they just go independent? Game development is not something that EA owns, the intellectual property to build amazing game experiences is in the people's heads, not ...

To me, gaming is not about a specific device, it is about playing games anytime, anywhere, and on the device you choose to play on.

Sony has always been a forced hardware lock-in to their products. You are forced to buy Sony hardware to use the PSN and play Sony published games.

Microsoft forces lock-in to the XBL platform. They are saying to XBL gamers that they don't care about what device you play on, they just want to lock you in to XBL.

So I suppose you are a developer on the team for Last Guardian?

There is what the companies say is the reason and there is the real reason. Why did they spend three years trying to build Last Guardian on the previous gen of consoles if it was technically impossible? Didn't they figure that out in the first year or so? If it took them three years to figure that out they are lousy developers.

I've worked on many development teams on...

Same reason that Last Guardian was announced in 2009 at E3 and is still getting optimized today.

Most demos are run on PC hardware because that is the development platform for games. It saves making a specific console build for events.

Digital Foundry will always run their tests and that is good because it keeps devs honest.

But, I doubt Remedy would show something they can't already do on the console. Remedy is one of the most honest devs out there.

VR has been done before and there are other companies well ahead of Sony on this. Oculus Rift has been readily available for about 2 years now.

If VR was the future everyone would've already bought the Oculus Rift package.

I agree that VR has a place, but to me it is a lot like connect, touch, and motion gaming. There will be things it is great and amazing at like FPS and driving games, then there will be games where it is an epic fail and unsuited fo...

How about:

Tomb Raider will be awesome, Uncharted 4 will be awesome, Scalebound will be awesome and Horizon will be awesome!

I don't see any reason to believe otherwise from the demos, gameplay, story, etc shown so far.

The problem with Kojima is that he takes a long time to create his games which increases their costs substantially. I am sure he will signup somewhere, but I don't know if he will have the financial and time freedom he did developing for Konami. Which may affect the quality of his next title.

I did the math $80 million / 6 million sales.

As for Europe a lot of the extra charges are taxes and importing fees.

I don't know how much these things really cost to create. So you may be right in the $27 range, but I just went by what was in the article.

Interesting....

The credits at the start were only Microsoft and Crystal Dynamics. No Square Enix.

Just going to speculate, but what if MS has a deal that if they like what they get they buy Crystal Dynamics and get the Tomb Raider IP.

That would explain the one year exclusivity and why MS is publishing this rather than Square Enix.

@flyingwombat33
Konami does not get $60 for every copy sold.

You have to take into account marketing, the retail cut, the cost to distribute physical/digital media, the press events, free copies to media, etc.

In the article they say they need 6 million sales to recoup the $80 million in development costs. That means each game sold is only giving the $13.33 to recoup development costs.

3935d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Yes, but they are talking about 6 million sales just to break even.

If you are investing $80 million and several years of your software teams into something you want to make a significant profit.

To justify going forward this IP probably needs about $240 million in sales (aka 18 million sold) to justify the continued investment to the people that own Konami.

These companies don't make games just to break even. They make games to give mon...

So, how does sales come into that topic if you aren't a fanboy... Little boy...

What a shock. A console that has nearly double the install base of the X1 will get more game sales than X1. Amazing! /s

Thanks you the Captain Obvious of the day award.

PS: This article does not mention anything about sales so you are off topic and just being a hurt PS fanboy by having the need to post such an obvious comment. You're just as bad as the idiots that wrote the captain obvious article.

I agree with your comment completely 110%...

But, to answer your question, it is probably a spite piece for all the 1080p (PS4) vs 900p (X1) articles that always come out.

Everyone knows that X1 has a lower resolution on many games and everyone knows that PS4 does not have backwards compatibility. But, so called gaming journalists seem to think it is important to keep reminding the world.

Frankly, these so called gaming journalists are just ...
