That is not about less options it is about buying the right thing for yourself and maybe saving some money in the process.
I haven't bought a disc game in literally years and I stream music, TV, movies through my subscriptions. So, why buy something I no longer need? It isn't about keeping options it is about right-sizing rather then over-sizing. If it saves me $50 that is $50 I can spend on something else. And if I buy several consoles because I have several TV...
Consoles are not super efficient. Consoles are designed to optimize cost and still deliver a good gaming experience that can be built upon for 3-5 years. The attraction of consoles to developers is their limited number of configurations/revisions. Whereas gaming PCs can have billions of configurations/revisions, consoles have less then 10 configurations/revisions in their lifetime, making targeting them in development "super efficient". There is no tech efficiency in a console t...
So, what is your point? Every exec is marketing their company's products. It is not the first time or first exec that has let people down in their statements.
If you rely solely on what execs say then you are a fool. As a game consumer we have to rely on what is done, not what is said. It was obvious after Don left that MS had to change the gaming segment of the company in a big way otherwise XB would die. So, they went and cancelled a bunch of games that weren'...
Phil made tough decisions on XB. Just like Sony did in the PS3 generation adjusting course when it was obvious they had to make major changes for the blu-ray and cell processor to work. It is well-documented that blu-ray was too slow for games so Sony came up with the concept of installing blu-ray games to the hard drive (Never done on a console before that). Also, the Cell was notoriously hard to use as a gaming CPU so Sony had to spend a ton of effort to clean that up. PS3 did well on t...
@notachance
I disagree with the power of the cloud.
This generation the cloud has become front and center in lots of small but important ways....
Cloud storage is now a dominant force in gaming. It is enabling people to persist their game progress across their consoles and everyone else's when the vendor does it.
I think the best use of cloud gaming was in the Forza Motorsport games this generation. Both were a use of c...
"but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher then any SSD available for PCs"
The key here is the word "raw". That does not always (but can) translate to a significant overall improvement in practical scenarios. The Cell processor was a "raw" masterpiece as well, but in pragmatic use it was often out performed by X360 which shipped a year earlier.
Simply, time will tell whether this is truely a game changer or just...
Brand fanboys that think that eventually certain companies will drop out because they don't sell enough consoles.
What people don't realize is that consoles are a form factor that are well suited to a certain scenario. Just like desk top PCs are for another scenario, tablet computers for another, phones for another, etc. It isn't about how many you sell of each hardware type. It is more about whether the hardware type you are selling is driving the sale of so...
@The_Sage
Again, not sure MS really cares. Selling consoles is not profitable for any of the gaming companies. At the start of the gen they sell them for break even or a loss. As the gen the progresses they start making a few bucks, but most of that goes into R&D of the next console.
The profits come from the subscription services and game sale royalties. Whether that is on PC or XB MS couldn't care less. The only reason companies make consoles is that...
I don't think MS cares whether you buy it on PC or XB. If you buy either or both platforms MS gets the same amount of money.
The gaming industry is the only one of the three major media distribution industries where hardware has exclusives. Completely dumb.
If I told you that if you bought a Panasonic blu-ray player you could only buy movies from Universal I would be laughed at. Or a CD player that could only play music from DCD2 records I would be laughed at.
But, in gaming this is a norm, and people think for some reason that competition would die if every console could pl...
Randy should stick to making games.... Specifically Borderlands because that's the only game in the last decade that his team made that was worth buying.
Sony had a really sucessful formula with TLOU. Released it at the end of the gen then remastered for the next gen. I can see them doing that again.
Personally I would like to see a Japanese focus now.
Picking up three or four really well known Japanese studios/publishers would be excellent.
Your comment is 100% correct. Many have already played Hellblade on all platforms and the gameplay is good as well. Even if they release pretty much the same game I will be happy. Really enjoyed the first Hellblade.

Any exclusive sucks from a consumer standpoint. Having to buy different devices because of exclusives is reallly, really anti-consumer....
Imagine if you could only watch Disney blu-rays on Panasonic blu-ray players or you could only listen to certain record labels on certain CD players. It just makes zero sense from a consumer standpoint.
The funny thing is this is exactly what console brand fanboys want. To me, there is one gaming community. And tha...
I like the policy of not talking about games until they are close to release. Although I like Phil I know that he is head of a XB and at the end of the day a marketing guy so what he says is something equivalent in my head to someone promising a billion dollars. Same with any executive of any gaming company.
It is totally fair that any company can do whatever they want.... But, fool me once and it is on them, fool me twice and I am the fool. To me, Hellblade II and Ever...
I find their web site underwhelming.
Seriously. It is obvious that this could not be done in the current gen easily.
Please describe how the competition supported their previous generation console any better then MS did.
So, do you buy vehicles that are the most flexible? Do you buy the most flexible home? The most flexible TVs? The most flexible phone like a smart phone?
The answer is probably not... People tend to buy based on budget, needs, and non-negotiable wants. There is nothing saying you have to own a disc player anymore. Many people are on video game, video, and music digital subscriptions now. Why would they need a disc player and have to pay $50 more for their console be...
