I disagree. I already have storage issues on PS4 and XO...
The forced use of SSD for certain games means you only have 1TB to play with. Even with compression this probably means about 20 large games. To be feasible I need space for 100's of games.
Until this is resolved I am going to be cautious about buying more then one or two next gen consoles.

I don't know where you get your physical vs difgitial sales numbers... But Sony, stated in July 2019 that digital overtook retail in their Q1 earnings...

Fact: Digital games sales continue to rise while physical sales continue to fall
Fact: COVID-19 pushed a lot of people that had not bought digital before to buying digital during the shutdown.
Fact: There are a few companies within probably 1-5 years that will have full low latency satellite internet up and running which will allow everyone to get broadband internet access anywhere.
Fact: Retail purchasing continues to be in decline...

You do know TLOU2 and Ghosts of Tsushima are coming out imminently and that will drastically raise Sony's average. There is pretty much no way either game is below 85.
But, you do bring up a good point that MS is improving. It would be better to show MS' average each of the last 5 years of releases.
You are correct. Since you don't have any XB, BC really does not play into your decision.
I think both are ramping up their PR. Don't think either is answering to each other.
To be frank though MS started the PR back in December with the game awards. It is just in the last month that Sony started to play.
I think both are selling points.
I have a huge backlog and BC helps me work my way through as time permits.

No, cross-gen games have been around for many decades.
At launch usually the only new generation only games are first party. The only thing that is happening here is that now even first parties are doing cross-gen. And I can guarantee that MS will not be the only cross-gen first party this generation. Given Sony's approach of not announcing any new games, I am almost positive that both TLOU2 and Ghosts of Tsushima will ship day one on the new PS5.
I think CDProjekt already announced that Cyberpunk will not release to the new consoles day one.
No. Finish CyberPunk and then maybe redo Witcher and Witcher 2 together.
There are games where this will be more achievable then others.
I don't know why people say XB needs more franchises. To me, they need more quality in the games they make...
Bleeding Edge, Sea of Thieves, We Happy Few, State of Decay all shipped to poor reviews.
We will see over the next few years how commtted MS is to quality games. Hellblade 2, Playground Games RPG, The Initiative's Game, Rare's Everwild all need to be AAA across the board.

Ya, the games industry has had a more is better mentality for a while now. I really miss the previous generations where there was not so many shovelware games.
On the indie front there might be 5% of the games worth playing. Everyone made such a big deal about indies at the start of the generation but honestly, I don't see what they didn't add that they weren't adding before. Now we just get 100's of shovelware games a year from indies.

Before PS there was no such thing. It was their decision to switch to an optical drive to spur CD/DVD growth that brought load times to consoles. In fact, it got so bad with PS3 and blu-ray that they had to start installing parts of games to the PS3 hard drive to get load times down from optical discs. And they called it a feature. LOL.
Consumer friendly has nothing to do with console performance or gameplay.
It is more about costs to own, consumer options, and features/services provided.

Ray tracing is simply a development tool. just like online features.
If the developer chooses to use it they do, if they choose not to use it they don't.
