I'm currently writing a series of articles about the history of the MMO and one of the biggest shocks I've had so far has been the cost of the subscription fees in the early 90s.

$6 - $12 an hour and it wasn't unusual for big fans of a game to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month.

So while I know bandwidth is cheaper and everything now, we're at a point where subscription fees are relatively cheap. If all you're ever going to...

It was the first really big game of the holiday season and I don't think there was enough incentive to buy it straight off the gun when compared to other releases.

Add to that a poor reaction to the beta, news of 1.2GB of patches over the first 2 days of release and a general tiredness of the brand and it's no surprise people are waiting for a price drop - sales will definitely go up closer to/after Christmas.

It's a shame because it really was a ...

It's a shame on the lack of LAN support, most people will go unaffected by that but some may go as far as to cancel their pre-order even.

Looking pretty good. I'm going to have to play Saints Row 2 now...

@FlashXIII

I've used OnLive extensively with Virgin and not had any issues. I don't see why that would be any different for BT users, especially those with higher end packages (those that'll get the most out of the service any way).

BT Users are going unpunished for OnLive usage until January. Bandwidth allowance goes completely unaffected by OnLive.

From what I've played I disagree. The MP is fun and many improvements have been made over UC2.

Perhaps I've not played it enough to judge effectively, but at this point I'd say I'm definitely impressed.

For the vast majority of people, the need for a new console just isn't there. Visually the 360 still has a lot to offer and, thanks to Kinect, a new userbase who will feel pretty screwed over if their brand new console suddenly becomes yesterday's news.

And, personally, I don't think slightly better graphics are enough reason to buy a brand new $500 console either way.

While I can't talk at length about it (it's not published yet), I did an interview with Steve Perlman at Eurogamer a couple of weeks ago that you may be interested in reading (when it's published, GamesCatalyst.com).

First of all, they were showing From Dust (with an OnLive exclusive touch interface) on an iPad2, I was told playing that game uses significantly less power than even watching a movie. So the first advantage is this idea of cross-platform play; you do...

I was playing my system at a house that usually struggles playing multiplayer games lag-free, and it was playing perfectly (in SD). That's probably around 3mbs. If you're expecting a whole game streaming over the internet and you've got less than 3mb internet, expect to be disappointed.

The OnLive system can use 360 Controllers. I've also successfully used 360 steering wheels on compatible games. There's the option to use a keyboard and mouse as well.

Rule of thumb: if it's USB compatible and works on a PC, there probably won't be much issue getting it to work with OnLive. At least, I've seen nothing to prove that wrong so far.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII could be very good, along with The Last Guardian.

The others are going to be interesting but nothing we'll ever get too excited about when looking back.

@gamingdroid

If it's anything like the PSN, those online indicators are handled manually. All the PSN sites said the service was live well into the downtime.

No comment on the current situation, just a general observation.

Considering for how long Microsoft have branded the 360 as more than a gaming unit, it surprises me that we're nearly into 2012 and it DOESN'T have a web browser.

I can't imagine anybody is going to complain about its inclusion though. Although I expect there'll be some bitching about it being IE.

Agreed. I just hope it doesn't get lost in all the November releases.

Hey, you can sell this game for $10 cheaper than you sold it two days ago, but you get to keep $50.

Or...ya know, you could keep $25 to yourself and pass the other $25 to the original developer.

Which would a business choose? It's not about being fair, it's about making the biggest profit and, as demonized as Gamestop is, any company in the same position would do the same thing.

Agreed with Kaos_VII.

ME2 is a good example. As are the Fallout games. Each contain tens of hours of entertainment on disk, each has a regular supply of post-release story-based DLC.

Why should we be expected to pay a significant portion of our weekly pay ($60/£40 is a lot of money, no matter how much you earn) for games that fall short of Fallout or Mass Effect's level of entertainment provided?

I'm not saying we should come to ...

The used game market (like piracy) is handled completely the wrong way. Rather than create a game that's worth hanging on to; rather than dropping prices so that more people will buy new; rather than support post-release with well-priced DLC - rather than all that a developer would rather spend millions developing systems that cut out second hand purchasers.

They'd rather punish people for spending less money than ask why people DO buy second hand.

Bu...

There are two problems with this article as far as I see. The first is that you presume that anybody with a computer and an opinion can become a respected writer. That isn't the case. Far from it.

Most of the people who submit to N4G, the people who write the original articles, go unpaid. Their reward is to have their opinions read. Keep in mind that the vast majority of people who write for hobby sites don't get review copies of the latest games, they don't mingl...

A great idea. I always thought the idea that the city never sleeps could be awesome as well: when you log off, your character remains stationary on the server (say, sleeping).

And, while you're sleeping, you can still get bitten. This would lead to having to barricade yourself somewhere safe and rely on other players who AREN'T logged off to protect you.

Something about that has always seemed so awesome to me, and would be addictive as hell as well. ...
