The huge problem for me at this point is that they always had a long term plan, but not much of a short term one. And it's been that way since launch. An odd title to look forward to, a few ports and that's about it.
To me, it seems they wanted to release because the console was basically done and they couldn't compete directly with next-gen consoles. Actually, it could have done with launching this year, with the GUI/update issues sorted and a few more big games....
@Blachek
They're not free. PS owners pay a subscription. Enough of them pay that subscription that Sony can offer a flat rate to give a game over the service. Developers take the amount knowing full well that many of the people won't pay otherwise and/or may buy a sequel/re-release. For Sony, anything past a certain number of subscribers is pure profit.
Which is partly why the "now more people HAVE to pay" thing is so surprising.
@Hicken
I saved a ton of money with Gold-exclusive deals over the years, long before PlayStation Plus was even a thing. I easily saved $60 a year and I'm sure it was the same for many people that were buying digital a few years ago, and probably even today.
And the point remains, getting an opinion from this site about whether this is worth it or not is like going and asking a CEO of Pizza Hut if paying below minimum wage is fair. Your opinion is all good...
@hicken
"To be honest, it doesn't matter whether it's a "miniscule" connection or an hour-long authentication. It's REQUIRED, and it shouldn't be. The extent of the connection is semantics, really."
Really? You're going to "correct" my spelling?

There is a hypocrisy. You only need to see posts in this very thread to see people are saying "well, the value is there for me, so I'm happy to pay."
That's exactly what Live players have been saying in defence of their service for 8 years.
The problem with getting support from people who are already paying is that those that are already paying aren't paying for anything but their free games and Sony's bottom line (because their paym...
@JoeReno @Hicken
It must be great to have awesome reading comprehension. Or at least to be so angry over a piece of technology you're not going to buy that you can't see I'm questioning the source, not the motivation.
I saw another poll the other day that was calling it 35% to 65% in PS4's favour and it wasn't being linked places where people were saying "lol, vote it down!!" That, at least in terms of bias, seemed far more accur...
You mean a Facebook poll posted on every gaming site and forum over and over again, at a time when people are annoyed about the Xbox One, might be a little biased?
I don't think that's an indicator of anything except that A\ People are annoyed because, mostly, B\ Microsoft's PR and inability to clarify has screwed them over. I don't need a poll to tell me either thing.
@kneon
Thanks for proving my point.
Right, but what would your reaction be if I said I was already paying for Xbox Live so that I can use party chat with family so it doesn't matter that I have to pay to play online?
Whatever else is included in the price, you're still paying for something that should be free. You're already paying for the net, you've already paid for the game.
Necessary? Maybe. Unlikely to affect many core Sony fans? Certainly. That's not where the issue is...
@KrisButtar
I don't have a source for it, but I'm sure Sony said that the MP Paywall was optional to developers - IE. they can choose to pay some of the lost PS+ fees from a monthly subscription/microtransactions .
Fingers crossed, although I'm not sure how successful an MMO would need to be to make that profitable for a developer.

It was a story that doesn't seem to have stuck in the public conciousness, but Kojima already confirmed a new Metal Gear Online 8 months ago.
I'm hearing a lot of mixed reports. A lot of MMO gamers seem a little put off after seeing more, while Elder Scrolls fans seem stupidly excited.
The deal breaker will be whether it's subscription based or not.
@KentBlake
That's the equivalent of saying that if I play nothing but MMOs and never trade in used games, I shouldn't complain about the DRM features of the Xbox One.
There are good things about Plus, and I've no doubt it'll continue to be great. But just because it's a great service doesn't mean those of us who pay and will continue to do so can't complain at it now being mandatory, just like we've been complaining about Xbox ...
"who asked for such a thing"
We all did, even in some vague way. Every time we complain about a game's graphics - many of us without any knowledge of how those graphics work - we're sending a message to the developers. Call of Duty's graphics are fine (if a little uninspiring), especially at 60FPS, but they're one of the things that people complain about over and over again.
Now, it might just be that people complain for the sake of ...
@KingElixer
They're not immune to poor sales and nobody is saying they are.
Get off of this exact corner of the internet for two minutes, go off onto the Microsoft's Facebook page or a MS fansite (somewhere where the people who will actually buy this stuff are hanging around), or better, go on outside and speak to a few casual gamers. There are a lot of people excited for the Xbox One. That's based on a couple of CGI trailers and the reveal of th...
@Dark Witness
That's right. Some people buy things and other people don't buy things. Thanks for your input.
That's still neither here nor there. The proof is already there that this isn't a device that's going to out and out fail.
It has everything to do with the consumer. Go ahead and spend 20 minutes on Amazon Reviews and then tell us all how the downscaling of the AAA side of the industry would go down.
It could be argued that at some point developers overstretched themselves, probably quite a while before the economy broke down and just as gaming was beginning to get a mainstream following, but how many of you were complaining then? How many people moaned about the price of the PS3 (and later, the ...
And there's already millions of people waiting to support the Xbox One.
The only people who think consumers won't touch the Xbox One are a small subset of a small subset of people, many of whom don't currently support Microsoft in any sort of large capacity. Even if you hate Xbox One, saying it won't sell is ignorant of reality.
And I'm not even talking about hypothetical console war stuff -- pre-orders are already through the roof.
"Completely irrelevant example."
By whose standards? Last I checked, successful franchises don't need a pedigree before you can compare them. Quit your bull and answer the point, or shout "ignorance" some more.
"Calling XIII-3 a part of a sub-series despite the massive push for it is also laughable."
So XIII-3 isn't a series within a series? Interesting. Thanks for that clarification, and excellently writ...
Or Xbox 360 rather.

Oh, and it's been that way for years. How many of you owned 360s and are only complaining about this now?
