"Ok this is 2010 not 2006. Standards are way higher now"

What precisely is the evidence of this? I could go dig up the dozens of previews for Avatar: The Game where mainstream sites basically said, as they always do, 'We know licensed adaptations are never actually good, but this game looks like it's going to break the mold' and then gave the final products 6s out of 10.

"99/100 previews say this is gonna be great"

"What about Sin & Punishment 2?"

This is my question as well. They either need to provide a concrete release date for North America or announce that it's been cancelled so people like me can homebrew our Wiis and import it already.

*If* it hits Western retail. As it stands, they've yet to announce whether or not it's going to be localized.

Well, good for the guys over at 2D Boy. If I recall correctly, World of Goo only cost them something 116,000 to make, so that's a pretty substantial profit right there.

Right, and most previews of the first game said 'This is going to be a great game.' They were wrong.

Here's a line from a preview from Gamespot for a game they eventually gave a 5.5 out of 10 to:

"we tried a new demo of Ubisoft's Eastern-themed first-person shooter, which is shaping up well with refined controls in time for its release alongside Nintendo's new console."

What makes the previews of this game more reliable than the previews...

Well, fair enough. But when I say core design philosophy, I mean the idea that a game should be playable first and foremost. If the game looks good but is unsatisfying to play from a mechanical standpoint, then that's an issue.

I'm hoping that when the game actually comes out, it can sell me on its design, but as it currently stands, there are a couple of things that concern me.

I'm not certain I'd go so far as to say there's 'No point' in doing Wii games with realistic art styles, but I would agree that in general such games don't really play to the system's strengths as well as games with more stylized graphics do.

That said, while I rather like Red Steel 2's art direction, I'm not quite sold on the game's underlying play mechanics, which goes against a lot of the Wii's core design philosophy.

"But eh, there's always going to be a few outliers"

While true, one could point to the fact that the vast majority of previews for any game are positive -- undeservedly so. The negative previews were the outliers for the first Red Steel too, all the way up to its release. We all know how that turned out.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No, maybe if 'quality control' had *ever* done anything to keep badly-done games from being made, it would make sense to think about implementing, but considering that none of the NES's vaunted measures actually did anything to stem the tide of broken, poorly-programmed messes that people like the AVGN have made a career out of reminding us how terrible they were, there is exactly zero evidence that it does so.

"Now, Nintendo is catering to people infatuated with Nintendo properties, and people who don't normally play games. My wife's mother has a Wii, and believe me, she is NOT a person who plays games normally. My wife's handicapped aunt who's in a wheelchair has a Wii as well."

Right, but what's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

"A few things that always seem to spark interest"

When a product is flying off the store shelves so fast that there are persistent shortages of that product, sparking interest is not the problem. The problem is too much interest and not enough of that product to go around.

Anyone who says the Wii needs to cut its price in order to grow its install base is misunderstanding how business works on a very fundamental level.

At a certain price point, a company can produce and ship a certain number of units in a certain amount of time. If that price lowers, then the number of units produced and ship decreases, and the amount of time involved increases.

If, therefore, Nintendo were to drop the price, consumers would certainly be demanding ...

MajesticBeast is probably referring to this pronouncement:

Of course, in light of the recent NPD info, it seems like that the link above is making the classic error of conflating units shipped to retailers and units actually bought by consumers, which are not the same thing.

"I'm guessing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom would have been in the top 25 or so, which isn't that bad at all."

If the numbers are true, that means Ultimate All-Star's already outsold Cross Generations of Heroes's first six months on the Japanese market, which is... bizarre when one considers how people in Japan actually knew what the heck Tatsunoko was in the first place.

"what are you smoking, your freaking crazy"

See? This is what I mean when I say it would not be a particularly popular move for Nintendo to do, even though they would make more money in doing so.

But if they were to raise the price back, A. Less people would want to buy a Wii, and B. At a higher price point, Nintendo would be able to produce more Wiis at a faster pace. Therefore no more shortages.

Incidentally, this would also bring down t...

Nintendo could very easily solve all its inventory problems right now by letting the price go back up to $250 to coincide with the rise in demand. Of course, this would not be a particularly popular move among gamers, so they aren't going to do it.

As much as I oppose this sort of thing on principle, on the other hand, maybe it's an improvement that for once a company's punishing someone who did something remotely related to piracy. Usually, they reserve these types of thumb-screws for people who have the misfortune of modding consoles to play imports.

Um, not really. The number of third-parties developing for the Wii and the popularity of the system have nothing to do with one another.

I thought it was pretty strange that it allowed it for pre-orders, since you could basically use it on any Wii game past, present, or future and I *really* didn't think Gamestop wanted to have something that had people validly saying "Oh boy, Zelda Wii/Galaxy 2/Another M pre-ordered for 15% off" because those are the types of games they can sell for 100% on for quite some time after release.

Granted, the bundle is a solid purchase even without the coupon, since at $5...
