The reason for Nintendo's success is quality. Their hardware always has the lowest cost, the lowest failure rate and is the most user friendly. Their games always always unique and high quality. That is why people like Mario, Zelda and so on. They are names people associate with quality.

Activision and Ubisoft also had a lot of million sellers on the Wii.
This is all on top of the fact that the dev cost for Wii U was around 1/3 that of PS3/360 games on average so the profit margins were much higher as well.

The Wii U version is more than likely just a port of the 360 version again, so of course it will be the same resolution. It costs them less money.
