Well, let's be honest, Sony didn't really have much to choose from. Infamous, Knack, Killzone, Driveclub, and Destiny bundles have been done before and MS has AC:U, and CoD. Their only choice besides the bundles we got was a Far Cry 4 Bundle(surprised this isn't happening). Doubt Mordor was an option because that game isn't as mainstream as TLOU/GTA or Lego/LBP. That being said, what they offer spans a nice sized audience for the best entry price they've offered all year. ...
Not even worth the trip.
No B2G1 on ALL Preowned games (only under 20$. Only launch new gen games run 20$)
No live or PS+ for 30$
No major discounts on newer games.

Even if it is just gameplay/trailers of known games(it isn't) like Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, The Order, Rime, Tommorow Children, Persona 5, MGS, etc... The event will still be worth the hype.

I believe this as well. I think Sony is relying entirely on Black Friday to push momentum going into December.

December is another story though. That month depends more on popularity, word of mouth, and advertising, rather than deals.
Breaking even is out of the question. Look at PS4 EU numbers. PS4's EU alone is nearly outselling both the XB1 and Wii U's WW totals added together.
If we're only talking America (the only place MS offers the 50$ pricedrop and bundlings) then yes it will be close.

I wouldn't call the Wii U or PS4 failures in Japan. Compared to their predecessors, yeah of course, they're underperforming. But both are moving respectable weekly numbers pre holiday and without big hitters. DQ, MH, FF, Pokemon, etc... Japan is still a 15m-20m console market space, which is much more than can be said about most other markets.

The funny thing is...that MS isn't even trying in Japan anymore. Their core fan base in Japan has only shrunk from Xbox to Xbox One. If they were in for the long haul, they would fund some first party studios in Japan, or some niche game like Sony/Nintendo. And even when they get a great niche Japanese game (D4) they refuse to promote it and stealth launch it at a conference.
