I can't believe they disrespected Adam Orth like this.

@darkrider

Haha remember when one of those ex MS employees (Albert Penello I think) was trying to say that the S would have better framerates than the PS5?

1591d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Again, this is fine, but a year ago Series X was a "4K Machine" and Series S was a "1440p Machine" and the games were going to run at the same framerate, just at different resolutions. We were assured that because Series S has almost the same CPU as the X, framerate wouldn't be an issue.

Part of the problem is that the Series S is by far the easiest new console to find, while the digital PS5 is very difficult to get. The difficulty of getting a disc PS5 has been vastly overstated-if you put in effort, you'll get one. But the digitals are super rare. So that $400 price point isn't as useful as it might be, because most people only have the option to get the Disc PS5.

This is a fine sentiment, but it is, of course, a different tune than we were hearing at launch when there was universal insistence on "scalability" and that the RAM and GPU differences between the Series X and S wouldn't affect framerate, only resolution. It was common knowledge one year ago that framerate depended on the CPU, and the Series S has almost the same CPU as the X, so there was no issue there.

The problem is that they left it at $60 too long, so people who started playing games in like 2008 during PS3/360 think that it's written in stone somewhere that games have always cost $60 and always should cost $60. PS2 games were typically $50, then PS3 games moved up to $60. Ironically if they would have just kept stepping it up $10 a gen instead of leaving it the same for the PS4 gen, there would probably be less controversy. $70 today is worth less than $50 was in the PS2 era though,...

@ShadowWolf712

It's so refreshing to see someone else who understands how cross gen is limiting this generation. Because of it many of Sony's best developers may only release one game actually built for PS5 in this entire generation.

And the idea Sony has done this every gen is laughable. Sure they've done it with MLB: The Show, but having Horizon, God of War, and Gran Turismo as cross gen games this far after the launch of PS5 would be like i...

@Nyxus

Another thing people overlook that contributes to this is that games have a longer sales tail now than they used to have. People still say that "games sell the vast majority of their copies in the first three months after launch" as if it's still true, but for tentpole games, it often isn't. You can look at charts and see that Sony's first party games keep selling even years after release (Spiderman 2018 is a great example of this, as is GOW 20...

@Nyxus

I mean, think about Days Gone. The game's director claimed that it sold about 8 million in a year. People have disputed that number, saying it may include users playing used copies, but even if you lower it to 5 million to be conservative, if a new Sony IP had sold 5 million in its first year in the PS3 era, it would have been considered a massive hit. I think Uncharted 2-3 each landed in the 6-7 million range, and that was being pushed as PlayStation's premi...

True.

Lol so basically they got a bunch of panic sales on PS3/Vita from the news the PSN was going to be shutdown on those platforms and then more panic sales everywhere when they announced they were pulling the MGS collection down because they lost rights to the video footage in the games.

1593d ago 1 agree1 disagreeView comment

Also if they would have released a Kojima-directed, PlayStation exclusive, non cross-gen MGS with no unnecessary Konami drama in 2016-2019, it would have sold 10+ million.

1593d ago 4 agree3 disagreeView comment

But the series as a whole has sold roughly 52-53 million (number in late 2020 was 51 and GOW 2018 has sold more since then). So a huge portion of that series's sales are tied to one game.

Also, if you are younger you may not realize that a game selling 10+ million on PlayStation (many MGS games have been multiplat with later collections but most other than 5 were at least long timed exclusives) was more of an exception in earlier generations than it has been since the P...

They screwed GT6 by chasing the "install base" fallacy and releasing it on PS3 after PS4 had launched. As a result, it sold about half of what GT5 did (despite having a larger number of PS3s sold when it launched).

Sony lost money on it because even at $600 (everyone conveniently forgets about the $500 20GB launch version) the PS3 was a great value for everything that was included. It will probably always be the best console for the money.

I agree with basically everything you said. And since you and I bought a launch PS3 with full BC, we have the right to complain. If we complain about the absence of BC on PS4/PS5, we are not massive hypocrites.

My comment is directed at the people who whine about how critical BC is, but when the chips were down and they had an opportunity to buy a PlayStation that could play all 3 generations of games, they were saying PS3 was the next Dreamcast and talking about how "...

Lol me. PS3 was such a better value than 360 at that time. I actually cared about my old library though, unlike all the people who whine about the lack of BC now but were "Wii60" people back then. Launch PS3 is probably the best value console that has ever been released when you consider the tech included at the time of launch.

Me too. Hopefully this is just step one.

Lol a nice reminder for everyone who whines about the lack of BC for older PlayStation generations that Sony released a PlayStation that could play all prior generations natively (at launch PS3 had full BC with PS1 and PS2) and people weren't rushing to buy it.

Unfortunately I think the taste they got of a successful, persistent multiplayer game with Rainbow Six: Siege has them in a frame of mind where they want to just keep trying until they get another one. I do agree that a hardcore GR would be much more likely to be a success, but it would also be more likely to be a "sells 5-8 million copies" success, rather than a "has a massive persistent fanbase and generates tons of ongoing revenue from mtx" kind of success, and one succ...
