Fortresscraft is actually mentioned in the article, but he's talking about the big publishers not taking the same path.

Bad example. Dark Souls wasn't developed by a single person, and costs way more than Minecraft.

Glad to see my 4 and a half years old PC can actually play this game on at least some level. The 8800 was a costly beast back then, but it still seems to hold up and pull its weight for quite long.

wow, the just missed the top 3 (apart from Bastion, which is something special due to the unscripted narration of the game): Ron Perlman in Fallout (short but iconic), Stephen Fry in LittleBigPlanet and Zoe Wanamaker in Fable 2.

Also, Glados in Portal is not a "Voice-over Narrator", she interacts directly with the PC and does not do any narration.

@DrakBlack, @limewax
If you die in Demon Souls there is a chance for redemption. Can you even compare that do dying in Diablo hardcore? That's where dying is REALLY final and every move needs to be calculated. No NG+++++ game can compare to that.

But should games be that way? You probably missed my point because you didn't fully read the post. Halo legendary-all-skulls-on mode provides a harder challenge, so even if each death takes you 5 minutes back you are...

That tucked on black hair in the feature pic looks like the cheapest 'shop of the year. Strahovski doesn't deserve this.

How come this list includes games that are not even going to be released on 2011? I thought that only the CELL is capable of time travel.

You are aware that gears 2 already had dedicated server support since one of the updates about a year ago, right? Right!?

That single sentence sums up best what Forza is all about.

@Canary,
But that's the big problem, isn't it? The difficulty is artificial.
Combat is obviously better than ES games, as those where never praised for sophisticated combat but for the enormous open world and deep gameplay that soaks you into an amazingly detailed workd.
So yes: ES doesn't compete with DS, but is DS combat better than what you get in The Witcher 2? Or the deep system of H&S games like Ninja Gaiden (which also boast artificial difficulty...

Soldier of fortune with its limb cutting feature probably deserves a mention there, and perhaps even Bulletstorm for it's not-so-serious violence (crutch shots etc).

That's because her skin (except the tatoos) and hair are not basic textures like the armor you see there.
Unreal engine streams textures on the fly. Combine that with consoles that have low graphics memory (things always need to be swapped) and you can get some nasty glimps of the low-res texture before the high-res texture is streamed.
It's a disadvantage but the downs are minor (you don't play the game from the perspective on this pic after all). On the other han...

Everything that can be done in other mediums can be done in games: cut-scenes are basically movies (MGS4 was practically 90% movie) and stories can be told in written form just like in books (Braid is practically using books to tell the story). Even TV like episodic format has been used in games (Alan Wake is one such attempt).

But some things that you see in games are just not possible on other mediums: how the hell would you transform that "would you kindly" scene...

This chart (which has no proper methodology about the chosen 9 games) only indicates that there is a bias within the industry - not who is biased. Since we're talking opinions here (which are always "biased"), it is just as possible that it's just other biased reviewers alter the metacritic average. IGN for example is the complete mirror image of Edge and you don't have a proper control group to hold this kind of research and see who's biased.

It's funny how you cut just half a sentence from the review and forgot it ends with:
"...we get to see a side to Marcus Fenix in particular that does at last breathe convincing humanity into this elephant-skinned hard man
". Great reading comprehension!

Also, how about this other bit in the review:
"When Epic plays to its strengths Gears 3 shines, with set-pieces that blend Naughty Dog-scale widescreen awe with a violent ferocity tha...

@Unicorn:
To the best of my knowledge, the only innovation to the genre carried by MW2 was the introductions of Deathstreaks - which finally offer some kind of leveling of the playing fields towards new inexperienced players.

It's not something major, but I don't recall any FPS doing anything similar prior to that. Still, I wasn't even talking about MW2 and whether it should have got the score it got or not, but about Gears 3 - which seems that does bring ...

What does Killzone 3 have to do with this review and where the hell did you read that GI knocked KZ3 for the set pieces in their review? Perhaps when they wrote "This newest installment fulfills the promise of the franchise through action-packed set piece encounters, electrifying gameplay, and surprising environments."? Are you out of your mind?

Wait, aren't you the same person who just wrote "Things are looking down... " on the 8.5 score for Gears on ...
