I absolutely agree that this generation of gaming needs to continue for a few more years (get the cost of making current-gen games WAY down from where it is now, as well as squeezing every single ounce of potential out of our current hardware). However, I can DEFINITELY see how more CPU power and more system/video RAM could come in very handy for games.

Ever since the Atari 2600 (the system I first started gaming on), I have waited for the day when truly cinematic gaming would b...

Exactly... All Sony would really have to do for the PS4 would be the following:

1. Use a PowerXCell 16i (two PPE's, and 16 SPE's... Two Cell's on a single chip) at 4Ghz or better.

2. Give the system at least 1GB of system RAM.

3. Give the system a healthy amount of video RAM and a newer graphics chipset (GeForce 9000 series maybe?)

4. KEEP hard-drives standard on the PS4.

This would help them keep the R&D costs down, a...

A joint venture between Sony and Microsoft could be interesting, but after the cut-throat tactics and $h1t talking on Microsoft's part this generation, I'm not so sure about how possible that is...

On topic:
But think about it... We didn't start hearing about the PS3 until four years into the PS2's lifecycle. Even though Sony started developing the PS3 right after the PS2's launch.

Man, looks like a lot of us ended up laid off... I've been out of work since July, and ever-so-grateful for the recent federal (US) unemployment extension that went through...

And funny how since I have been laid off, my PSN trophy count has damn near tripled... ;-)

I'm pretty sure EA will put out a sequel to Dead Space, but it's also very refreshing to see EA starting to branch off into some new IP's...

I personally liked Dead Space a lot. My first (and currently only) platinum PSN trophy was for Dead Space! ;-)

EA Redwood Shores has definitely gained my admiration, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next!

Actually, the PS2 used the GS (Graphics Synthesizer) chip for rendering/video output. VPU1 has a direct bus with the GS chip.

Also, the 20GB and 60GB PS3 has both the EE and GS chips, where the Motorstorm bundle 80GB (and PAL 60GB models) only have the GS chip.

The reason behind games looking better on the XBox last generation was due to the much newer technology that was put into the XBox (newer graphics chip technology).

The PS2 had the Emotion Engine...

It's just more of the same 'ol tired "Blu-Ray Trojan Horse" argument. This article is all about how Sony used the Playstation fanbase to get Blu-Ray out in the masses...

I guess they did the same thing with the PS1 (CD's), and the PS2 (DVD's) :-P

Once Killzone 2 releases, and everyone gets to see what deferred rendering can do for PS3 games (the kind of thing that the Cell+RSX combination was DESIGNED for), oh yes it's ON... :-)

Also, if you ...

"the ps3 is still losing money with every console sold."

How is this possible when Sony was nearly breaking even back in January '08?

And that was just with the Blu-Ray laser diode breakthroughs, removing the EE and GS (PS2 CPU/GPU) chipsets, and shrinking the Cell to 65nm.

Mmmmmm... 32 SPE goodness... :-)

It actually looks like a quad-cell processor... 4 PPE's and 32 SPE's

And PowerXCell... Double precision power goodness... ;-)

I wonder if these will be using the Power5 or Power6 architecture for the PPE's?

Honestly, the gaming division has been doing pretty damn good considering the PS3 launch fiasco...

Going from heavily ridiculed and low launch sales to 17+ million consoles sold and gaining momentum in a little over two years... All while being the most expensive console on the market...

I agree with Too Pawned, there may be small changes in SCE, but nothing major.

Why not? Microsoft did! ;-)

And technically, the Wii did as well... The GC used mini DVD discs (kinda like for DVD camcorders), and they just went with full-sized DVD discs this time... ;-)

But I do agree... Onwards and upwards!

Honestly, it will need some sort of optical drive for PS3 backwards compatibility.

One thing that is common for a Playstation console is a lack of titles at launch. Backward compatibility at least allows you to play your older games (and usually graphically enhanced a bit... God of War II looked amazing on my 60GB PS3 connected to my 1080p 37" LCD, not so great when I connected my PS2 to the TV using component and 1080i.)

Sony may want to start moving towards ...

I have only been in the closed beta for a week or so, and have already seen two updates to Home (first downloaded 1.0, now it's up to 1.2).

I have faith that they will be adding to Home on a regular basis, just like they do with PS3 firmwares...

From what I have seen so far, it has potential. I just hope that when they do launch the open beta, they make the bowling alley MUCH bigger than it currently is (the waiting times on bowling lanes can be pretty bad at times)...

Judging from the beta, Home has some serious potential...

I just can't wait for more content to be released for home, along with more areas. Sony has a nice framework going now... I can't wait to see what things will be like in a year or two... :-)

LOL... Well, 2010 would make for 10 years of the PS2 on the market... I would say the PS2 will start winding down over this coming year and be retired sometime in 2010.

And you're absolutely right on the price drop. If Sony can manage to sell one SKU at $299.99, they would see a large in-flux of new customers just like they did when they released the 40GB @ $399.99.

Personally, I hope the PS3 Slim is around the corner... I love my PS3, but it is BEASTLY huge... ;...

What would be nice is either 100% software emulation for the 40GB and new 80GB PS3 owners (PS2 games via. PSN), or offer a model with 100% hardware backwards compatibility when the PS3 Slim's come out.

Personally, I'm leaning more towards a slim with EE/GS in hardware... Hardware BC trumps Software BC anyday.
