You shouldn't compare hardware between consoles and PCs from a 1:1 perspective. Keep in mind that console developers can optimize and optimize strictly to the hardware they're working with. No Windows OS to worry about or any other behind the scenes functions.

I think bigfish meant at least one more year of strong developer support and hardware optimization, which sounds about right. If Sony's next console does in fact launch late this year, I don't expect many first party games for PS3 in 2014.
My guess is the PS3 from 2014 to end of cycle would get mostly sports games and PSN games, with the occasional 3rd party port. This was the case with the PS2 after the PS3 launch (with the exception of God of War II).
People will have from June to November to save (6 months). People who are employed will have no problem saving enough for launch consoles. Younger people who can only save $30 or so a month could still get to $200-$250 and go 50/50 with their parents for Christmas.
I think that if they do announce the PS4/Orbis/etc in just a few weeks that they'd be really smart to then drop the PS3 to $200. That would offset any losses in sales with new buyers.

False. The PS3 is currently about 4.2 million units behind the Wii in Europe (32.47M to 28.23M) and it outsold the Wii by over 3 million units in 2012. It should keep that 3 million margin (or better) in 2013 given the Wii's sharp slide in sales, leaving the PS3 about a million behind a year from now.

If Sony drops the PS3 to $200 this year (I'm pretty sure they will) they might flirt with 13 million units sold in 2013. That's the goal: 13 for '13. That'll get em' to over 85 million total.

Four years later and they're sitting at about 30% market share and still growing. One year from now and they'll likely be at over 83 million sold and only 20 million behin...
Their game division has been profiting for months (maybe years), but they're a multi-division conglomerate that makes TVs, computers, phones, movies, etc. Even if one division is profitable it's still possible for the company to lose money (via the other sectors). Sony's mobile and TV divisions aren't doing so well these days, but that could change.
So yes, the PS3 (and by extension SCE) are doing well.
