So there you have it. A glowing endorsement for Kinect, which "rocks". Why, exactly does it rock?

- Because it's sold a bunch of units.
- Because the space needed for it to work isn't THAT huge.
- Because the lag isn't really THAT bad.
- Because the launch games don't ALL suck.
- Because $150 isn't COMPLETELY outrageous.

Does it actually work for games? Is it fun after the novelty factor? ...

It's a bit early to consider this anything other than a successful marketing push. Oprah and Cirque were enough to get exposure, but ongoing sales will be based more on people checking it out & deciding to buy. And by "people" I mean other than the cheerleaders who are willing to ignore the fact that it doesn't work very well. Sorry guys, it just doesn't.

Dude, maybe you *should* be out of a job. The term "native" in this context refers to the resolution that a game is rendered at, as opposed to being upscaled or otherwise modified by display hardware. Nothing more.

Native 1080p means just that: rendered natively at 1080 lines of vertical resolution, displayed progressively. If he had stated "full 1080p native", then that would suggest 1920x1080p. But he did not.

Any audio (or video) "chips" residing within the unit are only there to do basic signal processing. Think about it. You'd need to also have the recognition software loaded, and all the reference samples from the user, and at least a rudimentary OS, all running on Kinect. Not saying it's impossible, just that it was obvious to me this wasn't gonna happen. That's why I suggested "the clapper"; a simple clapper interface to wake up the system, so that you ...

Wow, déja vu. It's almost like some of us were saying this was BS the first time we heard it. Don't slow down the hype train, tho, whatever you do.

"For you to say 'Xbox, turn on,' that means that some amount of the system needs to be on"

Yeah, like the WHOLE system needs to be on already. Since the voice recognition doesn't come from Kinect at all, but the system cpu, memory, etc.; Kinect is just the microphone. They kn...

Actually, I'm not sure if this post, or the video itself, is serious. Perhaps you could explain to me what is brilliant about this, or what a possible application would be.

I mean, I know I can stand in front of a bright light, or a mirror, and fight myself, for less than $150.

5577d ago 2 agree1 disagreeView comment

Pure brilliance indeed. Looks like a killer app for a $150 peripheral. Looks like it'd be fun as hell too, and take a long time to master, and never get boring.

C'mon guys, you know how this works. This isn't your first Xmas season, is it?

You try to create buzz by getting your media buddies to write favorable reviews. You tightly control the number of units released to retail, to create the impression of "shortage". You crank up the advertising machine and deploy all of your fake online would-be influencers.

Et voilá. Perception becomes reality, and you're the must-have toy of the seas...

LMFAO!

"...lots of fanfare and positive buzz from reviewers wowed by the magic..." Which he links to his OWN REVIEW, and that's it.

YOU ARE THE CONTROLLED.

Yeah, if it smells like BS, and looks like BS...

When's the last time you bough a game where the manual DIDN'T have a mis-print.

Clearly this thing isn't ready for the public, despite all of the paid celebrity cheerleading, and obvious attempts to hide it until the last second.

Tick-tock...

So that's the limit then? Kthx. On rails, and we have no idea about lag because they cleverly (not) didn't allow any footage of the player and the screen at the same time.

Kinda like the HHG video where they allowed him to be all "hype" about how "dope" it was, but of course not SHOW anything. The pattern is well-established by now, along with the embargo on reviews.

" how I can say, ‘Here’s what’s bad about this tech or that tech,’ especially when I don’t even know, and haven’t played with it myself."

“Kinect is totally unique. It delivers something that you can’t get anywhere else in the world.”

So wait - he has no idea what other systems can do, because he hasn't tried them. Yet he knows that Kinect offers something totally unique.

That's pretty awesome.

I keep seeing these references to facial recognition. Can anyone point me to a source where MS has demonstrated this capability of Kinect? This is a legitimate question. The only thing I recall is the original Milo concept video, where it was supposed to recognize Kate. Do any of the actual announced games have this?

Thx.

"We can argue back and forth all day but it's meaningless"

Hahaha, meaningless indeed, as your little quote-rant there demonstrates. We're all pretty familiar with the old tactic of making it personal, when you can't debate the facts.

"You do have one good point and that is they should not be using people like Aaron Greenberg as evidence for developers who are into Kinect."

Glad we can agree on that, as it was...

Sure, and the same can be said for your comments, or those of 90% of the people who visit this site. Or for that matter, people who post links to every little "article" like this; why do they bother to post every piece of marketing spin about Kinect? Unfortunately, if factual errors or misinformation go unchallenged, then popular opinion can be quite easily manipulated.

If you were to take more than a cursory look at my comment history, you'd see that I was ...

Actually, this little piece is extremely helpful. It shows quite succinctly that, even among the people most intimately familiar with Kinect, none of them has much good to say about its current capabilities, or the exciting games available on day one. Lots of statements about "unlimited potential", but nothing more.

Very telling, don't you think?

P.S. - I don't think you can honestly include Greenberg, Tsunoda, Thompson, and Spencer as &qu...

True statement from the dude demonstrating Kinect at the Pleasanton Macy's last weekend: "The lag is actually there on purpose, to give you time to see where you should move."

This was when demonstrating Ricochet to moms and kids who gave up after about one minute. I sure hope they don't remove the lag, as it's evidently a feature.

"And let's say you've got a pile of straws, and you want one. All you have to do is say 'Xbox, grasp at straws', and Kinect will grasp one for you..."

This is getting pathetic, but I guess it's their only option now to talk about the great things it'll do in the future. Because at present this thing is an abortion.

P.S. The day this thing recognizes me in a Man. U. jersey is the day I club it with a baseball bat.
